Though they narrowly lost to England, it raised India&rsquo;s profile globally, and Mithali was at the centre of it all. &nbsp; But the highs of 2017 were soon shadowed by controversy. Mithali&rsquo;s simmering conflict with coach Ramesh Powar erupted in 2018 when she was shockingly benched in the T20 World Cup semi-final against England. &nbsp; Mithali&rsquo;s absence raised eyebrows across the cricketing world, and soon the ugly details emerged. Former India cricket captain Mithali Raj has been roped in as mentor and advisor by Women's Premier League (WPL) side Gujarat Giants ahead of the inaugural season, which will take place in March-April this year.
Mithali, the highest run-getter in women's international cricket, had retired last year from all formats after a 23-year-long career.
As the mentor of the side, the 40-year-old cricketer will also promote women's cricket and help develop the sport at the grassroots level in Gujarat.
The Ahmedabad franchise had emerged as the costliest of the five teams during the auction recently, with Adani Sportsline shelling out Rs 1289 crore.
Mithali said the new BCCI initiative will help women's cricket grow steadily and encourage young players to take up cricket professionally.
"The inaugural season of the Women's Premier League is a fantastic move for women's cricket and the involvement of the Adani Group is a massive boost for the sport as well," said Mithali on Saturday.
"Women's cricket is growing steadily, and this kind of impetus will undoubtedly encourage young women to consider taking up cricket professionally.
"I believe that the high-impact participation of corporates will help hasten the process of eventually bringing more glory to India.
"This level of influence can help strengthen the sporting ecosystem and enhance opportunities for women athletes," she added.
Adani Enterprises director Pranav Adani called Mithali a role model and hoped her presence would help attract new talent in cricket and other sports.
"Mithali Raj is a role model for the young generation and we are delighted to have such an inspirational athlete on board to mentor our women's cricket team," said Pranav.
"We believe that the presence of international sporting heroes like Mithali will attract new talent not just into cricket but also into every other sport and transform the professional sports ecosystem," he added. Further as per reports, former Indian women's team coach WV Raman and former cricketer Jhulan Goswami have been offered a head coach and bowling coach position by the Delhi Capitals.&nbsp;

Apart from Benzema, Spain's Sergio Busquets, and Belgium captain Eden Hazard also announced their international retirement.
Gerard Pique &amp; Blaise Matuidi were the two footballers who retired from the sport. The multi-trophy winner, Pique played his last match at Camp Nou, which was also his 616th appearance for Barcelona. Matuidi, 35, who had helped France win the World Cup in 2018 decided to call it a day after he did not find any takers this year. Apart from them Argentina&rsquo;s Carlos Tevez; England&rsquo;s Jermain Defoe, Mark Noble and Jack Wilshere; Belgian footballer Mousa Dembele also decided to call it a day.

In the Indian women&rsquo;s team, legends Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj retired from all formats of cricket this year. From the men's side, Suresh Raina and Robin Uthappa retired from all forms of the game.&nbsp;

After being the flagbearer of Indian women's cricket for two decades, Indian legend Jhulan Goswami will bid farewell to the game at the iconic Lord&rsquo;s Cricket Ground on Saturday.
It will be the end of a glorious era for Indian cricket, with the 39-year-old the second Indian legend to hang up her boots this year after former captain Mithali Raj also decided to call it a day in June.
Nicknamed &lsquo;Chakdaha Express&rsquo;, Jhulan made her debut for the Indian team at just 19 years of age in 2002. She was one of the fastest in the game for she could bowl consistently around 120 kph in the past.
Jhulan Goswami also tops the list of all-time wicket-takers in women's ODIs, with a total of 253 wickets in 203 matches for Team India. Jhulan has been a constant source of motivation and inspiration for all the young cricketers and has been an ever-present figure in the game.

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has surpassed the legendary Mithali Raj to become the highest run-getter in Women's T20 Internationals for India. Harmanpreet achieved this milestone after scoring an unbeaten 31 off 32 against Sri Lanka in the second match of the three-match T20I series in Dambulla which India won by 5 wickets.
Indian allrounder now has 2372 runs from 123 T20I matches with the help of a century and six fifties. 
Notably, Mithali recently took retirement from international cricket. Mithali had scored 2,364 runs in 89 T20Is. Smriti Mandhana is placed third on the list with 2011 runs.
The 33-year-old Harmanpreet is also the third overall Indian batter with the most runs in T20Is behind Rohit Sharma (3313 runs) and Virat Kohli (3296 runs).

Indian women's cricket team's first assignment post the Mithali Raj-era is about to begin as Harmanpreet Kaur-led squad reached Sri Lanka ahead of the limited-overs series on Sunday.
India will lock horns with Sri Lanka in 3 T20Is from June 23-27 in Dambulla, followed by as many ODIs between July 1-7 in Pallekele. This will be India's first series since their early exit from the 2022 women's ODI World Cup, where they were considered one of the favourites to go all the way.

Mithali Raj who announced her retirement last week has opened up about her feud during the 2018 T20 World Cup with Indian women's team coach Ramesh Powar. Speaking to India Today, the ex-captain who was dropped from the Playing XI against England in the semifinal match revealed that she was treated unfairly during the marquee event. It requires a lot of courage when you are treated unfairly and people only know one side of the story, said the 39-year-old. After consecutive losses, desperate India thrashed Bangladesh by 110 runs to keep their hopes alive for qualifying in the ICC Women's World Cup semifinals on Tuesday at the Seddon Park in Hamilton.
India won the toss and went in to bat first. While the spirited Bangladesh bowlers came down heavily on the Mithali Raj-led side, Yastika Bhatia's 50 off 80 and a 48 run partnership between Sneh Rana and Pooja Vastrakar on the 7th wicket helped India post a 230 run target. Nahida Akter and Ritu Moni got 2 and 3 wickets respectively.
In reply, Indian spinners wreaked havoc on Bangladesh. While Sneh Rana picked 4 wickets, veteran Jhulan Goswami and Pooja Vastrakar picked 2 each as they restricted the Bangladesh women to a paltry 119 within 40 overs.
