India and the US on Monday firmed up an ambitious roadmap for defence industrial cooperation to accord high priority to various projects for the co-development of military platforms and hardware.

India and the US on Monday firmed up an ambitious roadmap for defence industrial cooperation to accord high priority to various projects for the co-development of military platforms and hardware, a move that comes against the backdrop of the Ukraine conflict and China's increasing muscle-flexing in the Indo-Pacific region.
The roadmap was finalised during talks between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his American counterpart Lloyd Austin, two weeks ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Washington.
At a media briefing, Austin said the US-India partnership is a "cornerstone" for a free and open Indo-Pacific and the deepening ties showed how technological innovation and growing military cooperation between the two "great powers" can be a force for global good.
The US defence secretary said the US-India cooperation matters "because we all face a rapidly changing world. We see bullying and coercion from the People's Republic of China and Russian aggression against Ukraine that seeks to redraw borders and threatens national sovereignty." It is learnt that Singh and Austin also touched upon General Electric's proposal to share technology with India for fighter jet engines and New Delhi's plan to procure 30 MQ-9B armed drones for over USD 3 billion from US defence major General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.
The US defence secretary also held separate talks with NSA Ajit Doval.
"We established an ambitious new roadmap for defence industrial cooperation with a fast-track (and) high-priority for co-development and co-production projects and to build closer ties between our defence industries," Austin said.
"We look forward to advancing some of those projects during the upcoming visits," he said, indirectly referring to Modi's upcoming tour of the US.
The two sides also deliberated on ways to increase information sharing as well as new initiatives to improve maritime cooperation, including in the undersea domain.
In a statement, the defence ministry said both sides will identify opportunities for the co-development of new technologies and the co-production of existing and new systems besides facilitating increasing collaboration between defence start-up ecosystems of the two countries.

He praised the Indian community abroad and said as the Indian diaspora gets the benefit of the country&rsquo;s image abroad, India also gets benefits from the diaspora&rsquo;s image in foreign countries.
He also highlighted various projects of cooperation between the two nations.

"The right of a woman to make autonomous decisions about her body is at the very core of her fundamental right to equality and privacy,' the Kerala High Court said.&nbsp;

The right of autonomy over one's body is often denied to the fairer sex and they are bullied, discriminated against, isolated and persecuted for making choices about their bodies and lives, the Kerala High Court said on Monday while discharging a women's rights activist charged in a POCSO case.
Rehana Fathima, a woman's right activist, was facing charges under various provisions of the POCSO, Juvenile Justice and the Information Technology (IT) Acts for circulating a video in which she was seen posing semi-nude for her minor children, allowing them to paint on her body.
Discharging her from the case, Justice Kauser Edappagath said that from the allegations against the 33-year-old activist, it was not possible to anyone to infer that her children were used for any real or simulated sexual acts and that too for sexual gratification.
The court said that she only allowed her body to be used as a canvas for her children to paint on.
"The right of a woman to make autonomous decisions about her body is at the very core of her fundamental right to equality and privacy. It also falls within the realm of personal liberty guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution," it said.
The order came on Fathima's appeal against a trial court decision dismissing her plea to be discharged from the case.
In her appeal in the high court, she had asserted that the body painting was meant as a political statement against the default view of society that the naked upper body of the female is sexualised in all contexts, whereas the naked male upper body is not treated to this default sexualisation.
Agreeing with her contentions, Justice Edappagath said that painting on the upper body of a mother by her own children as an art project "cannot be characterised as a real or simulated sexual act nor can it be said that the same was done for the purpose of sexual gratification or with sexual intent".
The judge said it was "harsh" to term such an "innocent artistic expression" as a usage of a child in a real or simulated sexual act.
"There is nothing to show that the children were used for pornography. There is no hint of sexuality in the video. Painting on the naked upper body of a person, whether a man or a woman, cannot be stated to be a sexually explicit act," the court said.
The prosecution had claimed that Fathima had exposed her upper body in the video and hence, it was obscene and indecent.
Rejecting the contention, the court said that "nudity and obscenity are not always synonymous".
"It is wrong to classify nudity as essentially obscene or even indecent or immoral," it further said.
The court pointed out that women of lower castes in Kerala had once fought for the right to cover their breasts and that there were murals, statues and art of deities in the semi-nude in ancient temples and various public spaces all over the country and these are considered as "holy".
It further said that nude display of the upper body of men is never considered obscene or indecent and is not sexualised, but "a female body is not treated in the same way".

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras retained the top spot among institutes in the country for the fifth consecutive year, while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru was adjudged the best university and research institution, according to the Ministry of Education's National Institutional Ranking Framework.
The rankings were announced by Union Minister of State for Education Rajkumar Ranjan Singh on Friday.
Seven IITs -- Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee and Guwahati -- figured in the top 10 in the overall rankings.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which was ranked ninth last year, improved its ranking to sixth this year, while Jawaharlal Nehru University retained its tenth position in the overall category.
The ranking framework, now in its eighth edition, evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practice, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity and perception.
Ranks are assigned based on the total sum of marks assigned for each of these five broad groups of parameters.
In the universities category, IISc Bengaluru bagged the top spot, followed by JNU and Jamia Millia Islamia at the second and third ranks. The trio were in the same positions last year too.
Banaras Hindu University, which was ranked sixth last year in the category, improved its rank and bagged the fifth spot.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore, Calcutta University, Vellore Institute of Technology, Aligarh Muslim University and the University of Hyderabad bagged the subsequent positions in the universities category.
Eight IITs -- Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Hyderabad -- were in the top 10 ranks in the engineering institutions category.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Tiruchirapalli slipped by one spot this year and bagged the ninth rank, while Jadavpur University made its entry in the top 10 in the category and bagged the 10th position.
Among colleges, Miranda House, Hindu College and Presidency College-Chennai retained the first and second and third positions.
IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore retained the first and second ranks respectively among the B-Schools in the country. IIM Calcutta, which was in the third spot last year, slipped to the fourth position while IIM Kozhikode bagged the third position.
In the pharmacy category, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Hyderabad rose to the first spot from the second position while Jamia Hamdard which was in first position last year slipped to the second spot.
In the medical college category, AIIMS, Delhi bagged the top spot, followed by PGIMER Chandigarh and Christian Medical College, Vellore. The trio bagged the same positions last year.
Among the dental colleges, Saveetha Institute of Medical And Technical Sciences-Chennai, Manipal College of Dental Sciences and DY Patil Vidyapeeth-Pune retained the top three positions.&nbsp;

The Railway Board has recommended a CBI probe into the Balasore train accident that has so far claimed 275 lives.
&ldquo;We have recommended a CBI probe into the triple train accident that claimed 275 lives and left over 1,000 injured,&rdquo; Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters in Bhubaneswar on Sunday evening.
The Centre along with the support of the state government are giving all support to the injured patients who are admitted to various hospitals in Balasore, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
&ldquo;Patients are being given all facilities in hospitals. There are teams of doctors who are taking care of patients round-the-clock,&rdquo; Vaishnaw said.
He said the government was trying to get in touch with the families of the deceased.
&ldquo;We are trying to get in touch with families of the dead,&rdquo; the Minister added.
The Odisha government on Sunday revised the triple train accident&rsquo;s death toll to 275 from 288, and put the number of injuries at 1,175.
Chief Secretary P K Jena said some bodies were counted twice. "After detailed verification and a report by Balasore District Collector, the final toll has been fixed at 275," he said.
Three trains&mdash; Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah super fast and a goods train &mdash; were involved in the pile-up on Friday, now being described as one of India&rsquo;s worst train accidents.
The Coromandel Express rammed into a stationary goods train and many of its carriages overturned including some onto another train - the Bengaluru-Howrah superfast express which was also passing by at the same time on Friday.

I would like to express our deepest possible condolences to the families of all those who have so tragically lost their lives,&rdquo; Charles was quoted as saying in a statement issued by Buckingham Palace.
In the statement that was also posted across the royal social media channels, the 74-year-old monarch speaks of the special place in his heart for India and reflects upon his fond memories of a visit to Odisha 43 years ago.
&ldquo;I do hope you know what a special place India and the people of India have in our hearts. I have particularly fond memories of visiting Odisha in 1980 and meeting some of its people on that occasion," it said.
"I pray, therefore, that you may be able to convey our most heartfelt prayers and sympathy to all those who have been affected by this appalling tragedy, together with our special thoughts for the people of Odisha,&rdquo; the King concludes.
The message follows several condolence messages from the UK government, including from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who extended his &ldquo;heartfelt support and admiration to the survivors and those working tirelessly to respond&rdquo; to the accident.
On Sunday, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly also expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the Odisha train tragedy.

As the war of words continues between the Congress and the BJP, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has hit out at Rahul Gandhi who attacked Prime Minister while addressing a gathering in the United States of America.&nbsp; &nbsp; Stressing on &ldquo;certain collective responsibility&rdquo;, Jaishankar said he refrains from indulging in politics abroad and will argue "vigorously" on his return to India.&nbsp; &nbsp; In a veiled dig at Rahul Gandhi, Jaishankar said &nbsp;"There are sometimes things bigger than politics and when you step outside the country, I think that's important to remember," S Jaishankar said.&nbsp; &nbsp; The Minister made the remark as he was speaking at an event in Cape Town.&nbsp; &nbsp; Rahul had described PM Modi a 'specimen' and said, "There are people in India who think they know more than God and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one such specimen. There is a group of people in India who are absolutely convinced they know everything. They think they know even more than God."&nbsp;

&nbsp;BJP MP from Kannauj Subrata Pathak and 51 others have been booked for allegedly assaulting police personnel, leaving three sub-inspectors and four constables injured.
On the complaint of injured Sub Inspector (SI) Hakim Singh, an FIR has been lodged against 10 named, including Pathak, and 42 others, Station House Officer (SHO), Kotwali police station, Ajay Awasthi said.
The injured also include Sub Inspectors Hemant Kumar, Tarun Singh and constables Rohit Lavania, Subhash Kumar and Neeraj Kumar. They all have been sent to the district hospital for medical examination, he said.
In his complaint, the police outpost incharge of Mandi Samiti Hakim Singh said on Friday night he received instruction to help the Unnao police which had come here to conduct a raid in connection with a case of kidnapping. The latter held five people from a gym.
When the five were being taken to the police outpost, a youth reached there and demanded that all of them be released immediately. They also tried to free themselves when the Unnao police tried taking them along. In the meantime, one of them called BJP leader Subrata Pathak and about 15 minutes later, the MP reached the spot with his security personnel Sachet Pandey, the SI said.
As soon as he got down from the car, the MP asked about the in charge and on being indicated towards Hakim Singh, he caught hold of his collar, the victim said, adding that when colleagues tried to save him, more than 40 people attacked them and tore their uniforms as well.
When the police from other stations reached the spot, the MP ran away with his supporters, the complainant added. Efforts are on to reach out to the MP, said SHO Awasthi.
FIR has been lodged under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (mischief with deadly weapon), 332 (obstructing public servant), 353 (obstructing public servant in the performance of his duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), 427 (causing damage to the amount of Rs 50 or more) and 225 (attempt to forcible release of offender or other person from police custody) of the Indian Penal Code and under section 7 of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 1932, he added.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) Akhilesh Yadav, in a Tweet, posted that the public wants to know when will Pathak be arrested.
"Today's latest news: Policemen filed FIR against Kannauj's BJP MP, Subrata Pathak&hellip;public is asking when will he be arrested? Should the police save their lives by hiding behind the bulldozers to avoid these BJP men?&rdquo; the Samajwadi Party chief asked.

The Silicon Valley entrepreneur who hosted Congress leader in the US said Rahul doesn't claim to know everything but is very curious.&nbsp;

Visiting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has a deep and humane understanding of technology and connects it directly with the impact it would have on common man and jobs, said the young Indian-American who hosted him for a meeting with Silicon Valley startup entrepreneurs working in the field of Artificial Intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies.
"He never claims that he knows everything. ...but he is always curious. (During the meeting) he expressed his kind of limitation on different subjects, but he always shows his appetite for the technology," said Shan Sankaran, founder of FixNix, a Silicon Valley-based startup that provides a cloud-based platform for simplifying GRC-related (governance, risk, compliance) decision-making.
Sankaran helped organise "AI and Human Development: A Chat with Rahul Gandhi" at the Plug and Play, a Silicon Valley incubator for startups, on Wednesday.
During the event, Gandhi told the audience he tries to emulate his father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on adoption of technology in various sectors including banking, according to Sankaran.
"He (Rahul Gandhi) is seeing how innovation can further fuel (growth and development) in case he becomes prime minister of India (through) his vision," said Sankaran, who was given the rare O1 visa by the US meant for individuals of extraordinary capabilities.
Sankaran said Gandhi also indicated he is in favour of regulating technologies rather than banning them. "Technology needs a lot of regulation, not banning. Right now, what's happening in India, TikTok, you don't like it, Ban it. ..The US has not banned TikTok or drones. They kind of regulate. They (United States) have an issue, they made the CEO of TikTok to come talk to the all the member of the Congress. They have a house inquiry, what they call. So those kinds of interactions always happen with even the so-called technology companies and ourselves. They never ban. Drones, they regulate. You cannot fly your drone on top of the Golden Gate," Sankaran said.
Referring to the conversations Gandhi had on the Pegasus spyware at the meeting, Sankaran said the technology invented by the Silicon Valley and Israels of the world has helped many tyrants and is being used to silence discussed, press, judiciary, opposition and independent institutions of the world, including Rahul Gandhi.
"But Rahul cannot be silenced, because he has no baggage. All the other opposition in India can be silenced. They may have some baggages. They are worried. But Rahul doesn't have any baggage. Today in fact, he said, hello to Modi. He will be listening, is what he said. It's in a comical way, but that's what it is," he said.
Sankaran said the time he spent with the Congress leader tells him that Gandhi "has a human heart" and is very empathetic.
"He is a human being. In fact, I will call him Buddha....I will call him Buddha. He's a living Buddha. So, I think he's not behind any of this fancy designations. He could have become prime minister when they had that majority. He could have become prime minister twice. In fact, he never became the prime minister. Not a single soul in the Congress would've objected in case he wanted to become prime minister. He never choose to," he said.
"I think, he's a guy personally I see as a role model for the future generations to adopt. In fact, when he's now thrown out of his home which he had as a member of parliament, he doesn't have a single iota of hatred against Modi," he said.
"He is a great Buddha and he follows Dhamma for that matter. In many private interactions, what I found is he has very deep knowledge in many subjects not just technology," he said.
Sankaran has 17 provisional patents in his name. "I moved here to build my future dreams, continue to innovate more, see how my innovation can help society," he said.

A day after an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar on June 4, 2023, eyewitnesses recounted their experience. The state government has claimed that some portions of the bridge had been brought down deliberately due to some design flaws.
One witness said to news agency ANI, "This shows corruption in government. Earlier, a similar incident had taken place. I feel that construction of the bridge will stretch beyond 2030 now."
Another witness said, "There was a very loud sound like something had exploded. I don't know if people will ever be able to use this bridge. Don't know if duplicate material is being provided."
The bridge was supposed to connect Khagaria district with Bhagalpur.
"It may be recalled that a portion of this bridge had collapsed on April 30 last year. We had, thereafter, approached IIT-Roorkee, which is esteemed for its expertise in construction matters, to conduct a study. It is yet to come up with a final report but experts who had studied the structure had informed us that there were serious defects," Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav said at a press conference.

Around two days after the horrific train crash in Odisha, rail services resumed on the stretch of tracks where the tragedy occurred.
Drone visuals from the morning of June 5, 2023, showed repaired and restored tracks, even as bogeys of the ill-fated trains littered the surrounding area.
Around 200 bodies are yet to be claimed, as per reports. The death toll stands at 275 so far.
Amid the debris and relief work, passenger trains were seen passing through the area.
The first train to pass through the area after the crash was a goods train. It was seen off by Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on the night of June 4.

Reportedly, a portion of the same bridge collapsed in April 2022 as well.
