Olivia Newton-John, ‘Grease’ star and singer, dies at 73, John Travolta and others pay tribute

Olivia Newton-John, best known for portraying the role of Sandy in smash-hit film ‘Grease’, died on Monday morning, according to a statement from her husband John Easterling. She was 73. The statement on the singer’s verified Instagram account read, ‘Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time.’

‘Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer. Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer,’ he added.

In September 2018, the singer revealed that she was treating cancer at the base of her spine. This was her third cancer diagnosis. Earlier, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in early ‘90s and in 2017.

Olivia Newton-John was a country-pop and soft-rock sensation in the 1970s and 80s. She sold over 100 million albums and during her five decades in music, she had close to 40 entries on the Billboard Hot 100. She also won four Grammys.

After the success of ‘Grease’, co-starring John Travolta, she delivered three huge hit singles, including ‘You're The One That I Want’ and ‘Summer Nights’, both with Travolta.

Paying tribute to the singer-actor, Travolta wrote on Instagram that Olivia ‘made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible. I love you so much’.

Oscar-winning actor Marlee Matlin, who co-starred with her in the 1996 film ‘It's My Party’, and Dionne Warwick, who recorded a duet with her in 2006, also paid tribute to her on social media.
