'Laal Singh Chaddha', 'Padmavaat' among other movies that faced boycott calls for 'hurting sentiments'

‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, has triggered outrage ahead of its release. A section of Twitter users are calling for a boycott of the film, which is the official remake of Hollywood film ‘Forrest Gump’ as old statements of Aamir resurfaced online.

Several Bollywood films have faced boycotts ahead of their release. Here is a look at six other movies people boycotted for unfounded reasons:

‘The Gray Man’: Dhanush announces his return in the sequel

Chhapaak (2020)

Ahead of the film’s release, Deepika Padukone made headlines as she visited Jawaharlal Nehru University to stand in solidarity with the CAA-NRC protests. Several right-wing groups called her support a publicity gimmick and claimed that she was paid by the opposition party. BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga also called for a mass-boycott of all films starring Deepika Padukone on Twitter.

Padmavaat (2018)

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, was mired in controversies for almost a year. It faced trouble from fringed groups, who alleged that the movie distorted ‘historical facts’ and featured a romantic scene between Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji and Rani Padmini as a dream sequence.

Karni Sena vandalised the sets of the movie in Kolhapur's Masai plateau and held fierce protests in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Dangal (2016)

Aamir Khan’s former wife Kiran Rao talked about feeling unsafe in India in 2015. The actor also reiterated the same sentiments in an interview. Large section of people were disappointed with the then couple and deemed them to be ‘anti-national.’

The actor’s posters and effigies were burnt and #BoycottDangal was trending on social media.

PK (2014)

One of the first posters of the Rajkumar Hirani directorial sparked controversy as it featured Aamir Khan posing naked while holding a transistor strategically. FIRs were filed against the makers for promoting nudity and hurting religious sentiments.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela (2013)

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, was initially titled ‘Ram-Leela’. However, various protests were held across the country as people considered this insulting to religious sentiments. The makers were asked to change the name by the Delhi High Court.

My Name is Khan (2010)

Shiv Sena and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) called for a ban on Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's film after the former expressed disappointment about the exclusion of Pakistani cricketers from the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Later, SRK tweeted that he was sad to see his statement being misconstrued.
