BAFTA 2026 pays tribute to late Dharmendra, Esha Deol says father touched hearts across continents

Dharmendra was honoured in the memorial segment at the 79th BAFTA Awards, where his image featured alongside global cinema legends. Esha Deol expressed pride and emotional gratitude, recalling his legacy as an actor and humble human being.

Actor Esha Deol said her late father and Hindi cinema legend Dharmendra captivated audiences across the globe after he was honoured in a memorial segment at the 79th edition of the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

The BAFTA Awards ceremony was held on Sunday in London, which included late Dharmendra as the sole Indian representative in its tribute to the cinematic greats lost over the past year. His image appeared on screen alongside French actress-singer Brigitte Bardot and German actor Udo Kier.

Global legends like Robert Duvall, Catherine O’Hara, Val Kilmer, Rob Reiner and Tom Stoppard, among others, were also remembered at BAFTA for their contribution to cinema.

Dharmendra died on November 24 last year at the age of 89 at his residence in Mumbai due to prolonged illness.

“That’s my papa, his magic, a pure heart, the purest soul who touched millions of hearts across continents...not just as an actor but as a humble human being,” Esha told PTI.

Dharmendra’s career spanned across six decades and over 300 films. Affectionately dubbed the ‘He-Man’ of Indian cinema for his rugged physique and striking looks, he was a rare actor who mastered every genre, from romance to action, comedy, and drama, establishing himself as a versatile performer.

Some of his most iconic films include “Satyakam”, “Baharein Phir Bhi Aayengi”, “Sholay”, “Chupke Chupke”, “Charas”, and “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani”, and others.

His final big screen appearance was in filmmaker Sriram Raghavan’s movie, “Ikkis”, which released in January.

In the past, actors like Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor, and Dilip Kumar and playback singer Lata Mangeshkar were also honoured at BAFTA.

The evening was also a triumph for Manipuri coming-of-age comedy-drama “Boong”. Produced by Farhan Akhtar’s and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, the movie won the prestigious BAFTA Award for Best Children's & Family Film. It is directed by Lakshmipriya Devi.

Actor Ranveer Singh has approached the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash a criminal case over his remarks and imitation of a Daiva sequence from Kantara: Chapter 1 at IFFI 2025.

Ranveer Singh approaches Karnataka HC to quash case over Kantara ritual remarks

Actor Ranveer Singh has approached the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash a criminal case over his remarks and imitation of a Daiva sequence from Kantara: Chapter 1 at IFFI 2025.

Actor Ranveer Singh has moved the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash a criminal case registered against him in connection with his remarks and imitation of the Daiva sequence from Kantara: Chapter 1.

The petition was filed in Bengaluru and is being heard by a bench headed by Justice M. Nagaprasanna after legal action followed allegations that his comments were controversial.

In the petition, Singh’s legal team argued that his actions were not motivated by malice and were instead expressions of appreciation for the film and its portrayal. His counsel submitted that he was “arguing that his sincere praise for Rishab Shetty’s performance and the film’s characterisation has been unfairly given a criminal color.”

The defence further stated that the actor has been under pressure regarding the matter, pointing out that police have already issued two official notices. “The defense emphasised that the actor is facing undue pressure, noting that the police have already issued two notices in connection with the statement.”

During the hearing, Singh’s lawyers sought an urgent listing of the petition and requested a same-day hearing, citing the stress caused by the ongoing proceedings. However, the High Court rejected the plea for urgency. Justice Nagaprasanna questioned the basis for expediting the matter and raised concerns about granting preferential treatment.

Justice Nagaprasanna observed whether investigations should be fast-tracked simply because the petitioner is a prominent Bollywood actor or whether similar urgency would be expected even for a Hollywood actor. The observation underscored the principle of equal treatment before the law.

Despite repeated submissions from the defence, the court declined to grant an urgent hearing and proceeded with its regular schedule. The petition has been listed for hearing tomorrow under the standard judicial timeline.

The case continues to draw attention from legal observers and the public, with the court’s upcoming hearing being closely watched.

Background to the Controversy

The dispute arose after Ranveer Singh reenacted a Daiva scene from the climax of Kantara: Chapter 1 during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa. While praising Rishab Shetty and recalling the film’s impact, Singh referred to the Chamundi Daiva sequence as a highlight.

Although Shetty was seen laughing during the event, portions of social media later criticised Singh for allegedly being insensitive to the cultural and spiritual importance of the ritual. Many users objected to the reference to Daivas as a “ghost,” emphasising that Daivas are revered forest deities.

The criticism escalated after another clip surfaced showing Shetty cautioning Singh against mimicking the performance, which triggered further online backlash.

Following the controversy, Ranveer Singh issued an apology, stating that he did not intend to hurt sentiments.

Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, 90, suffered a brain haemorrhage but is stable and recovering at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, doctors said, adding that he is on ventilator support as a precaution and no surgery is required.

Screenwriter Salim Khan on ventilator support and stable, say doctors

Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan, 90, suffered a brain haemorrhage but is stable and recovering at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital, doctors said, adding that he is on ventilator support as a precaution and no surgery is required.

Veteran screenwriter Salim Khan suffered a brain haemorrhage which has been tackled, is on ventilator support as a safeguard and stable, doctors treating him said on Wednesday, a day after he was admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.

The 90-year-old, one half of the celebrated Salim-Javed duo which scripted films such as "Sholay", "Deewar" and "Don" with Javed Akhtar, is in the ICU and recovery might take some time given his age.

"His blood pressure was high for which we treated him and we had to put him on a ventilator because we wanted to do certain investigations. Now the ventilator was put as a safeguard so that his situation doesn't get worse. So it is not that he is critical," Dr Jalil Parkar told reporters.

"We did the investigations that were required and today we have done a small procedure on him, I will not go into the details. The procedure done is called DSA (digital subtraction angiography). The procedure has been accomplished, he is fine and stable and shifted back to ICU. By tomorrow, we hope to get him off the ventilator. All in all, he is doing quite well," he added.

Asked whether he suffered a brain haemorrhage, the doctor said, "Unko thoda haemorrhage hua tha, which we’ve tackled. No surgery is required."

As concern over Khan's health mounted, his children, including superstar Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan, daughter Alvira, and sons-in-law Atul Agnihotri and Aayush Sharma, have been seen outside the hospital along with other well-wishers. His long-time partner Akhtar was also seen coming out of the hospital.

Khan, a household name in the 70s and 80s, turned 90 on November 24 last year. It was the day Dharmendra, the star of many of his films, including "Sholay", "Seeta aur Geeta" and "Yaadon Ki Baraat", passed away.

Hailing from an affluent family in Indore, Khan arrived in Mumbai in his 20s with dreams of stardom. He was good looking and confident he would make a mark in the industry as an actor. But that did not happen. And then, after struggling for close to a decade and getting confined to small roles in films, he changed lanes.

He worked as an assistant to Abrar Alvi and soon met Akhtar to form one of Hindi cinema's most formidable writing partnerships. They worked together on two dozen movies with most of them achieving blockbuster status.

Other than "Sholay", "Deewar" and "Don", Khan and Akhtar also penned "Trishul", "Zanjeer", "Seeta Aur Geeta", "Haathi Mere Saathi", "Yaadon Ki Baarat" and "Mr India".

Shah Rukh Khan says the title ‘King’ is a reminder to live with humility and purpose as he voices Mufasa for Disney’s cruise show and prepares for his upcoming film “King”.

Being 'King' has never meant power, always responsibility: Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan says the title ‘King’ is a reminder to live with humility and purpose as he voices Mufasa for Disney’s cruise show and prepares for his upcoming film “King”.

He’s King Khan to his fans and the industry and his next film quite coincidentally is called “King” too. Shah Rukh Khan, however, brushes off the power the title bestows on him, saying it’s less an identity and more “a reminder to live with heart, humility, and purpose”.

“The word 'king' has never meant power to me. It has always been about responsibility -- to the people who believe in you and the stories you choose to tell...,” Shah Rukh told PTI in an email interview.

The star, first seen in the TV show "Fauji" in 1989, has worn the ‘Bollywood king’ crown with ease over three decades. Maybe not any more.

“As time passes, you realise that what truly matters is not the title, but the intention behind your work,” said Shah Rukh, who has lent his voice to fireworks show "The Lion King: Celebration in the Sky" aboard Disney Cruise Line’s latest ship, Disney Adventure next month.

"At this stage of my life and career, the title ‘King’ feels less like an identity and more like a reminder to live with heart, humility, and purpose. Whether it’s narrating a story aboard the Disney Adventure or choosing my next film, what matters most to me is creating work that brings people together, makes them feel something, and leaves behind a little bit of joy," the 60-year-old said.

Shah Rukh, who began his acting career in English theatre in Delhi, gave voice to Mufasa in the Hindi version of Disney’s 2024 film "Mufasa: The Lion King". His sons joined in too – the older Aryan (28) was the voice for Simba and the younger AbRam (12) was the young Mufasa.

He and wife Gauri have a third child. Daughter Suhana, 25, shares the screen with her father in Siddharth Anand's upcoming film "King".

While "The Lion King" clearly holds a special place, classics like "The Jungle Book" continue to entertain the Khan clan. The children are also drawn to Pixar favourites like "Toy Story" and almost anything from the Marvel universe are “huge hits”.

“Each generation finds its own connection, but what never changes is how these stories bring us together. Whether it’s rewatching a classic at home or sharing a magical moment on a Disney Cruise or at the Parks, that sense of connection stays the same,” he said.

Discussing "The Lion King”, he said it will always be close to his heart as it’s a timeless story about growing up, understanding responsibility and finding your place in the world.

Disney’s "The Lion King" is the coming-of-age story of Simba, a young lion prince who must reclaim his kingdom after the death of his father, Mufasa.

The film explores themes of responsibility, loss, and the circle of life.

Shah Rukh, whose association with Disney began in 2004 with the Hindi version of "The Incredibles", titled "Hum Hain Lajawaab", said animation’s limitless possibilities continue to inspire him and the films have been a big part of their family time.

"I find that there’s an emotional honesty to animation... There are no human beings in 'The Lion King', and yet this is a deeply human story at its core, centered around the relationship between a father and son, exploring themes of love and loss. That’s the magic of animation.

“It helps us reflect on our own lives and relationships in profound ways. I believe this is why stories such as 'The Lion King' endure and are so well-loved even after 30 years," he said.

Terming his latest project with Disney, which will debut during the vessel’s maiden voyage from Singapore on March 10, a “full-circle moment”, Khan said returning to the world of "The Lion King" feels like “coming home”.

“I’m excited that more families and fans across Asia will now get to celebrate this classic tale and its iconic music in a brand-new way, creating lasting memories at sea.”

"That emotional connection and celebration of storytelling, where nostalgia and newness come together to make magic, are what make this project truly special and why I happily said ‘yes’," he added.

“The Lion King: Celebration in the Sky” will feature pyrotechnics, immersive lighting effects and a music-driven narrative unfolding above the ship.

The soundtrack includes beloved songs from the franchise such as “Circle of Life”, “Hakuna Matata”, “He Lives in You” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”.

In Shah Rukh's view, cruises teach you to slow down. “And I think we all need that sometimes.”

“When you’re surrounded by the ocean, there’s calm and perspective. The world feels vast, and your worries feel just a little smaller,” he mused.

The Supreme Court questioned the title of filmmaker Neeraj Pandey’s film ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’, issued notices to the Centre and CBFC, and sought an affidavit stating it does not denigrate any community.

Supreme Court Questions Title of Film 'Ghooskhor Pandat'

The Supreme Court questioned the title of filmmaker Neeraj Pandey’s film ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’, issued notices to the Centre and CBFC, and sought an affidavit stating it does not denigrate any community.

Observing that a section of society cannot be denigrated in the name of freedom of expression, the Supreme Court on Thursday rapped filmmaker Neeraj Pandey over the title of his movie 'Ghooskhor Pandat'.

The top court was hearing a plea seeking a stay on the release of the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer film on OTT platform Netflix.

A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan issued notices to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Central Board of Film Certification and Pandey on a plea against the movie.

"Why should you denigrate a section of society by using such a title. Freedom of expression is one thing. That doesn’t give license to denigrate anybody. This is against morality and public order. We will not allow you to release the film unless you tell us the changed title...We thought filmmakers, journalists, etc are responsible people," the bench said.

The top court directed Pandey to file an affidavit that the film 'Ghooskhor Pandat' doesn't denigrate any section of society.

During the hearing, the counsel appearing for the filmmaker submitted that a new title has not been decided as yet and assured the court that it will be such that there will not be any conflict.

"You make a submission that you will not have this title. We are fully respecting the right under Article 19(1)(a). But there are certain restrictions. We want to include the aspect of fraternity. It is one of the basic principles of the Constitution. We want to relate this matter to fraternity.

Why can’t there be a restraint when you try to make this kind of division when there are already fissures in society. Why should you denigrate anybody? Why should you denigrate a section of society by this kind of title? Being woke is one thing. But denigrating the public and creating this kind of unrest. You are adding to the unrest," the bench observed.

The matter would be heard again on February 19.

The plea alleged that the movie promotes caste and religion-based stereotyping and threatens public order, communal harmony, and constitutional values.

'Ghooskhor Pandat', produced by Pandey, was announced by Netflix at an event in Mumbai recently.

It also stars Nushrat Bharuccha, Saqib Saleem, Akshay Oberoi, and Divya Dutta.

The top court was hearing a PIL filed by Atul Mishra, National Organisation Secretary of the Brahman Samaj of India, seeking directions to stay the release of the movie.

The plea alleged that the movie title and storyline are prima facie offensive and derogatory, which portray the Brahmin community in a defamatory manner.

The PIL objected to the use of the word “Pandat”, a caste and religion-identifying title, alongside “Ghooskhor”, which denotes bribery and moral corruption.

On Tuesday, Netflix India had informed the Delhi High Court that the film will be renamed.

"The producer has taken a conscious decision in light of the concern that has arisen to change the title of the film from 'Ghooskhor Pandat' to an alternate title which more accurately reflects the film's narrative and intent," the HC had recorded.

Rajpal Yadav tells CJI Surya Kant his legal troubles inspired film title ‘Solah Sawan Jhel Ke’

Actor Rajpal Yadav told the Supreme Court that his prolonged legal and financial troubles inspired the title ‘Solah Sawan Jhel Ke’. The remark came during a light-hearted exchange with CJI Surya Kant in a cheque-bounce case.

Actor Rajpal Yadav turned a Supreme Court hearing into a light-hearted moment on Wednesday when he revealed a film title inspired by his long-running legal and financial troubles.

During the hearing of his cheque-bounce case, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant asked Yadav, “Kuch naya bana rahe ho nahi?” (Aren’t you making anything new?)

After greeting the CJI, Yadav spoke about his career and the financial losses he claimed to have suffered over the years.

“Sir, pranam karta hoon. Do-dhai sau filmein ki hain. Pichhle 13 saal mein do-dhai sau crore ka nuksaan bhi kar chuka hoon. Ata Pata Laapata mein mera Rs 17 crore dooba,” Yadav said.

The CJI then encouraged the actor to make another film and entertain audiences. “Ek achchi si movie bana ke logon ko entertain karo,” the CJI said.

Yadav responded by revealing that he had already thought of a title based on what he had gone through between 2010 and 2026.

“Sir, 2010 se 2026 tak jo hua, uska title bhi humne socha hai, Solah Sawan Jhel Ke,” he said.

The title roughly translates to “having endured 16 monsoons” and was a reference to the prolonged legal and financial difficulties Yadav described during the hearing.

The actor has been involved in the cheque-bounce dispute for several years. The case concerns an alleged loan taken by Yadav for his film ‘Ata Pata Laapata’, with the dispute continuing through the courts since the early 2010s.

Karan Johar Announces Final Season Of 'Koffee With Karan', Show To End After 22 Years

Karan Johar has announced the final season of Koffee With Karan, 22 years after the show began. The eighth and last season will stream from October 14 on Jio Hotstar.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has announced the final season of his popular talk show ‘Koffee With Karan’, marking the end of a journey that began in 2004.

In an emotional message, Johar looked back at the origins of the show, its controversies, trolling and conversations, while also acknowledging the love it received from audiences over the years.

Recalling how the idea for the show came about, Johar said, "I think it was June 2004 where I told my dad that I really want to host a talk show, and I want to get two celebrities or stars and just have an informal, candid chat with them. And he looked at me, he said...'Karan you going to call your friends and chat with them. You do it every day. Who is going to pay you for that'. He passed away that month itself, actually on the 26th of June."

Johar said the first episode was shot on August 16, 2004, and recalled the journey of the show across eight seasons and 161 episodes.

"The very first day I shot for it was August 16th, 2004, and I'm here now, eight seasons later, 22 years later, 161 episodes later. A lot happened. I called lovers, I called friends, I called families, I called lovers who then went on to become ex-lovers. Some of them even got married. I nearly put an end to the careers of national icons. I'm living with the word nepotism even today. Conjecture became a kind of national word."

The filmmaker became emotional while announcing that the upcoming season would be his last.

"But whatever it was, I know the show gave me so much. I reached a point of time in my life where I realised that all good things have to come to an end. With a kind of heavy heart, I have to say that this will be my very last season of Koffee with Karan."

Johar also acknowledged the possibility of continued trolling and criticism while highlighting the audience's continued affection for the show.

"There will be trolls, there will be comments, there will be posts, and I'm ready to take that on. But within all of that and beneath all of that, I know there is still abundant love for this cup of coffee. So join me in my last season of Coffee with Karan and have that one last cup of coffee with me."

Since its first season in 2004, the show has featured several prominent Bollywood personalities and generated headlines, memes, debates and memories among viewers.

Jio Hotstar shared the announcement video on its Instagram handle.

The trailer of Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, explores juvenile crime, justice and moral complexities through two police officers investigating a high-profile case.

‘Daayra’ Trailer: Kareena Kapoor, Prithviraj Sukumaran Face Off In Dark Crime Drama

The trailer of Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, explores juvenile crime, justice and moral complexities through two police officers investigating a high-profile case.

The trailer of Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer Daayra was released on Monday, offering a glimpse into a crime drama centred on juvenile crime, justice and the moral complexities surrounding an investigation.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film features Kareena and Prithviraj as senior police officers who find themselves on opposing sides while investigating a case that has triggered widespread public outrage.

According to the makers, Daayra is "inspired by true events."

The story begins in the aftermath of a crime that sparks nationwide anger and sets two separate investigations in motion.

As the probe progresses, DCP Ajooni Kohli, played by Kareena, and DCP Raman Kumar, portrayed by Prithviraj, approach the case from different perspectives.

The makers said the film explores how the two officers navigate the same system while dealing with questions surrounding duty, justice and the distinction between right and wrong.

Kareena spoke about the experience of working with Gulzar and taking on a character that challenged her as an actor.

"What I loved about working with Meghna is that she makes you question everything you think you know about a character. There's so much thought behind every detail, but she never takes away your instinct as an actor. Playing DCP Ajooni Kohli stayed with me... because she pushed me into a space I hadn't really explored before, and at this stage in my career, that's always exciting. And then to have Prithviraj opposite me was such a pleasure. He's an incredibly intelligent actor... very present, very instinctive... and there was an ease to working together that I really enjoyed. This was one of those films where the people you're surrounded by make the experience that much richer."

Prithviraj, meanwhile, said it was the complexity of his character that attracted him to the project.

"What drew me to DCP Raman Kumar was the complexity beneath his composed exterior and the questions he finds himself grappling with during the investigation. What I admire is how the film maintains that objectivity right till the very end, allowing the audience to form their own perspective. Meghna Gulzar is a filmmaker whose craft I have closely followed and Daayra gave me the opportunity to work with her. It was a rewarding experience and working with Kareena made the journey even more special. I hope the audience connects with the world we have created, a story that is gripping and deeply human."

Meghna Gulzar On The Film’s Moral Grey Areas

For Meghna Gulzar, Daayra is not a straightforward story of good versus evil.

According to the filmmaker, the narrative moves beyond clear-cut definitions of right and wrong and instead examines the grey areas surrounding the characters and their choices.

She shared, " It explores the grey and dismantles it. As a filmmaker, that grey space is always challenging, and yet compelling - where characters make choices, live with them, and the audience is left to engage with what unfolds. The main protagonists of Daayra are brought to life with towering performances by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran. I'm grateful that I got this dynamic combination of actors, along with an exceptional ensemble cast, to explore the delicate lines of law and justice that traverse the story of Daayra. I am very excited to share this world of grey with the audience and welcome them into it!"

Daayra is scheduled to release in cinemas on September 18, 2026.

The Kerala High Court granted a 13-day interim stay on the release of The Kerala Story 2-Goes Beyond, observing prima facie non-application of mind by the CBFC while certifying the film.

Kerala HC stays release of 'The Kerala Story 2-Goes Beyond'

The Kerala High Court granted a 13-day interim stay on the release of The Kerala Story 2-Goes Beyond, observing prima facie non-application of mind by the CBFC while certifying the film.

The Kerala High Court on Thursday granted an interim stay against the release of the film "The Kerala Story 2-Goes Beyond", saying that prima facie there is non-application of mind by the censor board while certifying the movie.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas passed the order on two pleas challenging the release of the film.

The film was scheduled to be released on February 27.

The court in its order also said that the guidelines for ensuring a film does not disrupt social harmony appear not to have been adhered to by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

"Prima facie, these guidelines do not seem to have been borne in mind by the CBFC while granting certification and there is a manifest disregard of the applicable law, necessitating this court to interfere," it said.

It also said that dissemination of content, which has a tendency to create discord, disturb law and order, even undermine social harmony cannot come within the gamut of freedom of speech and expression enshrined in Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India.

The court directed the central government to consider and pass orders within two weeks from Thursday on a revision petition moved by one of the petitioners -- Sreedev Namboodiri -- against the certification given to the movie.

The court said the Centre has to give an opportunity of hearing to the petitioner, CBFC and the producer -- Vipul Amrutlal Shah -- before passing any order on the revision petition.

"In the meantime, there will be an interim stay on the release of the film "The Kerala Story 2-Goes Beyond", and the respondent 2 (CBFC) and respondent 3 (Shah) are directed to ensure that the movie is not released for public viewing for a period of 13 days from today," the court said.

Three separate pleas have sought to quash the CBFC certificate granted to the film.

Of the three, the court dismissed one for lack of locus standi and allowed the remaining two, including the one by Namboodiri.

Besides quashing the movie's certification, Namboodiri's plea filed through advocate Maitreyi Sachidananda Hegde had also sought modifications, including reconsideration of the film's title.

The petitioner had alleged that the film was certified without due compliance with the statutory requirements under the Cinematograph Act, 1952.
