Filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who is gearing up for the release of &lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan 2&rsquo;, attended the second edition of CII Dakshin Media and Entertainment Summit in Chennai and talked about south Indian films' seminal influence on world cinema.
During the panel discussion, Mani Ratnam said that if the Hindi film industry stops referring to itself as Bollywood, then people will stop identifying Indian cinema as Bollywood.
National Award-winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran agreed with Mr. Ratnam and said, &lsquo;I&rsquo;m not a fan of the &lsquo;woods&rsquo;. Like Bollywood, Kollywood. We need to see it as Indian cinema on the whole.
At the event, he also emphasized the importance of telling more rooted stories to be accepted universally.

He captioned the post 'PS2 at London'. &nbsp;He has also composed the film score and soundtrack of its prequel 'Ponniyin Selvan: I'.

Actor Kamal Haasan and filmmaker Mani Ratnam are set to reunite after 35 years for a film, titled 'KH234'.

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan surprised his fans as he announced his collaboration with filmmaker Mani Ratnam after a gap of 35 years. He shared the official statement on his Twitter page along with a motion video on Sunday (Nov. 6). The 'Vikram' actor wrote, 'Here we go again! #KH234,' and he called this film 'a next step in his journey.'&nbsp;
The film is expected to release in theatres in 2024. It will be jointly produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies, Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International, and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies. The music of the movie will be composed by the music maestro AR Rahman.
The news of this collaboration has taken the internet by storm and fans are expressing their excitement on social media. One Twitter user wrote, 'This is going to be huge! All the best Kamal sir!,' while another commented, 'Kerala Fans Also Waiting The Classic Combo Kamal Sir And Mani Sir.'

&lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan: I&rsquo;, directed by Mani Ratnam, has created magic at the box office. The film is now the highest grossing Tamil film of all-time, surpassing Kamal Haasan starrer &lsquo;Vikram&rsquo;s lifetime earnings of ₹183 crore in the state, according to trade analysts.
The film surpassed &lsquo;Vikram&rsquo; to become the highest grosser in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday and closed the day with a total of ₹186 crore. According to some sources, the film will have an uninterrupted run till Diwali, so it'll comfortably cross the ₹200 crore mark in Tamil Nadu.
'At the end of Wednesday, PS1&rsquo;s Tamil Nadu gross stood at around ₹186 crore. It has beaten Vikram&rsquo;s lifetime collection in TN in less than two weeks. With no major releases till Diwali, PS1 will comfortably cross ₹200 crore mark in Tamil Nadu and it&rsquo;s not going to be easy for any other film to beat the record,' trade analyst Trinath said.
&lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan: I&rsquo; has earned over ₹400 crore globally and is inching closer to the ₹450 crore mark. He added that the film will end its theatrical run with over ₹500 crore gross earnings.
&lsquo;PS1&rsquo; narrated the tale of early life of Arulmozhivarman (Ponniyin Selvan), who later became the Chola emperor Rajaraja I (947&ndash;1014). Actor Jayam Ravi plays the role of Arulmozhivarman in the film. The film also stars Aishwarya Rai, Vikram among others in pivotal role. The film released in theatres September 30.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan made her acting debut almost 25 years ago with director Mani Ratnam&rsquo;s epic political drama film, &lsquo;Iruvar&rsquo;, and the rest is history. Today, she is one of the most bankable actors, having carved a niche for herself not only in Indian cinema, but also across borders.
Here&rsquo;s a recap of how Mani Ratnam discovered his favourite student, Aishwayra.
Who introduced Aishwarya to Mani Ratnam?
Cinematographer Rajiv Menon introduced Aishwarya to Mani Ratnam. In a previous interview with The Hindu, Aishwarya revealed that she had worked with Rajiv on a number of ad films, and during one of the shoots, he shared the music of &lsquo;Roja&rsquo; and she fell in love with the tunes. Rajiv, who knew Aishwarya was an admirer of Ratnam&rsquo;s works, informed the actor that she was being approached for a film, which she initially thought was a joke.

The director discussed a few ideas about his film &lsquo;Iruvar&rsquo; with Aishwarya during their first meet. He bowled her over with his humility by asking her if she&rsquo;d do the film when he already knew it was a &lsquo;yes&rsquo; from her side. Mani Ratnam's narration about &lsquo;Iruvar&rsquo; assured Aishwarya that this was the film with which she will make her debut as an actor. She said, &lsquo;Listening to him back then was like sitting in front of a teacher; I just knew that it was the perfect place for me to start my work as an actor. I didn&rsquo;t have any previous training. No one in my family has ever had any links to the film industry. I was nosediving into it and, when I met Mani, I knew this was where I had to start. I sort of felt like I belonged.&rsquo; Post 'Iruvar', Aishwarya starred in Mani Ratnam&rsquo;s 'Guru' and 'Raavan', and now in multi-lingual film &lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan&rsquo;, alongside Chiyaan Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi and Trisha.
Aishwarya's equation with her 'guru' 
The actor has spoken about her 'guru' Mani Ratnam in several recent interviews, and she has been seen seeking his blessings by touching his feet during the promotions of her latest release. Aishwarya said she owes a debt of gratitude to the ace director and praised him for making 'Ponniyin Selvan: I', an ambitious historical epic drama. At &lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan's trailer launch in Chennai, she thanked the director for the privilege and honour to take her as his student in the project. Referring to him as her 'guru (mentor)', the actor said that she has learnt &lsquo;passion, commitment, dedication, and focus&rsquo; from him.
Aishwarya's daughter in "awe" of the director
During one of the film&rsquo;s promotions, Aishwarya mentioned that Aaradhya is in &lsquo;awe&rsquo; of Mani Ratnam. She revealed that her daughter Aradhya got a chance to be on the sets of the film and recalled how excited she was when Mani Ratnam gave her the opportunity to say 'action'. She said probably that&rsquo;s the most cherished memory for Aaradhya and she values it already and with growing years she&rsquo;ll cherish it even more.
What happened on sets of 'Ponniyin Selvan'?
Aishwarya&rsquo;s &lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan&rsquo; co-star Trisha, in a recent interview, revealed that Mani sir had to request that they behave less amicably at work. Calling Aishwarya, one of the hardest-working performers, Trisha told NDTV, she got along pretty famously on set with Aishwarya and there were times when the director would scold them for their 'camaraderie'.Fans are over the moon to see Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Mani Ratnam reunite for the period drama.

He said, ‘It was the first big Tamil adventure that I was reading and it was fascinating. He had written in such a fashion that it was a spectacle and very vivid. I could visualise while reading it.’    He also talked about the cast of the film ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I' and said, ‘We had Vikram first, it was a difficult role. It is important to have actors who believe in the film… If you have the right cast, then every character stands out.’    The fimmaker also talked about working with Shah Rukh Khan again. In an interview with Pinkvilla he said, ‘You should ask Shah Rukh... I should have a script ready for him, that’s when I can go to him. So it’s all a function of a script. We just met each other in a function, that’s all. Like I am telling you it’s driven by an idea of a script. He is likely to be discharged on Tuesday, according to news agency PTI.
&lsquo;Sources said the ace director was taken to the hospital with symptoms of fever today and he underwent a checkup. He had tested negative for<a href="https://www.editorji.com/coronavirus" target="_blank"> COVID-19</a>, and is likely to be discharged today, the source added," PTI quoted a source as saying.
On the work front, Mani Ratnam is awaiting the release of the period drama &lsquo;Ponniyin Selvan&rsquo;, starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram, Karthi and Jayam Ravi among many others. The teaser of the film was released recently and it has been making headlines ever since. Produced by Lyca Productions, the film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's popular historical novel Ponniyin Selvan (The Son Of Ponni). The film is slated to release on September 30 this year.

The much-awaited film of 2022 Mani Ratnam- Chiyaan Vikram's ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ Part One has landed into legal trouble. The makers of the film have been issued a legal notice by a lawyer Selvam for misrepresenting the Cholas.   As per reports in India Today, the makers received a court notice. And the petitioner has pointed out that Aditya Karikalan (played by Vikram) doesn't have tilak on his forehead. But, the poster of Vikram from Ponniyin Selvan shows a tilak. Hence, he demanded a special screening of the film ahead of its release to check if the makers had distorted historical facts in the film. None of the alleged has responded to the notice as of now. Directed by Mani Ratnam, 'Ponniyin Selvan' is made in two parts, and the first part of the film is scheduled to release on September 30th.

Dhruv Vikram took to Instagram stories and wrote, “Dear fans and well-wishers, Appa had mild chest discomfort and is being treated for the same. He DID NOT have a heart attack as reports falsely claim. We are pained to hear rumors to this effect. That being said, we request you to give him and our family the privacy we need at this time. Chiyaan is fine now. He is likely to be discharged from the hospital in a day. We hope this statement provides clarity and trust that the false rumors will be put to rest’. 
On the film front, Vikram will be soon seen in ‘Ponniyin Selvan Part 1’ alongwith Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The film also stars Karthi, Trisha and Jayam Ravi in important roles. The film is being directed by Mani Ratnam and has its music composed by AR Rahman.

The makers of the film unveiled the first look poster of Aishwarya on Wednesday introducting her as Nandini, the Queen of Pazhuvoor. Sharing the poster, Lyca Productions wrote, 'Vengeance has a beautiful face!' 
Nandini is the wife of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, portaryed by Sarathkumar., who conspires the downfall of the Chola dynasty. The actor will also feature as Mandakini Devi, mother of Nandini in the film.

Contrary to the popular belief, R Madhavan did not make his debut with a TV serial. Before that, he did a TVC for a sandalwood talcum powder in 1996, which was directed by Santosh Sivan. Seeing his dedication to his craft, Sivan recommended him to the ace film-maker Mani Ratnam for a screen test in the Tamil film &lsquo;Iruvar,&rsquo; who rejected him at that time because 'his eyes looked young.'
