Roblox Introduces Age-Based Accounts for Younger Users, Expands Parental Controls Globally

Roblox has introduced new Kids and Select accounts for users under 16, adding stricter content controls, age verification, chat restrictions and expanded parental oversight worldwide, including in India.

Roblox Introduces Age-Based Accounts for Younger Users, Expands Parental Controls Globally

Roblox has rolled out a new age-based account system worldwide, including in India, as part of a broader effort to create safer and more tailored experiences for younger users. The changes introduce two new account categories, Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, designed for users under the age of 16. The company says the new framework combines age verification, content filtering, communication controls, parental oversight tools and moderation systems into a single ecosystem that adapts as children grow.

The launch follows a limited rollout in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands and New Zealand earlier this year. Roblox says users will be automatically assigned to the appropriate experience based on its age-check systems, while access for users aged 16 and above remains unchanged.

Two New Account Types For Younger Players

Under the new system, Roblox Kids accounts are aimed at children aged 5 to 8 and come with the platform's strictest protections. These users can only access experiences carrying Minimal or Mild content maturity ratings, and chat functionality is disabled by default.

Meanwhile, Roblox Select accounts cater to users aged 9 to 15. These accounts provide access to a wider catalogue of games, including those rated up to Moderate. Chat settings vary depending on age and region, although additional safeguards remain in place for all users under 16.

Roblox says experiences available to younger users will undergo additional scrutiny, including developer verification, real-time evaluations and enhanced content reviews. Categories such as social hangouts, free-form drawing experiences and content featuring sensitive themes are excluded by default from these curated catalogues.

Parents Get More Control Over Children's Experiences

Alongside the new account structure, Roblox is also expanding its parental control features. Parents who link their accounts to a child's profile already have access to tools for managing content settings, communication preferences, screen time and spending limits.

The latest update extends several of these controls until a child turns 16. Parents can now block individual games more granularly, directly manage chat permissions and approve access to specific experiences that may sit outside their child's default account restrictions.

The company believes these changes will give families greater visibility into how children use the platform while allowing flexibility to customise experiences based on individual needs and maturity levels.

Stricter Safety Measures Continue To Expand

The rollout forms part of Roblox's wider push toward age-appropriate online experiences. The company recently became one of the first major gaming platforms to require facial age checks for access to certain chat features. Once the transition is complete, users who do not complete an age check will no longer be able to access standard Roblox accounts or use chat features, regardless of their age.

Roblox is also tightening restrictions around external links. Later this month, users under 16 will no longer be able to share or view social media links across profiles, game pages, community spaces and creator tools. Looking ahead, the company plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) framework for content ratings, aligning its systems with a widely used global standard for digital games and apps.

Together, these updates signal Roblox's continued focus on balancing online safety with age-appropriate access as its younger user base continues to grow.
