iOS 18 developer beta: How to download, Install, and explore new features

iOS 18, unveiled at WWDC, features AI-enhanced Siri, new home screen customization, and improvements in messaging. Available for developers now, it will release to the public later this year.

iOS 18 developer beta: How to download, Install, and explore new features

At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple announced the much-anticipated iOS 18, the next-generation operating system for iPhones. The update boasts a slew of new features, including an AI-powered Siri, a customizable home screen, an app lock feature, a personalized control center, and enhancements to the Messaging and Phone apps.

iOS 18 will be available to the public later this year, but those enrolled in the Apple Developer program can already download and experience the developer beta.

Getting the iOS 18 Developer Beta

Previously, joining the Apple Developer Program required an annual fee of $100. However, with the release of the iOS 17 developer beta last year, Apple introduced a free tier, allowing anyone with an Apple ID to access developer betas.

It's important to note that developer betas are primarily for developers to test their apps and identify bugs, so users should be prepared for potential issues. A more stable public beta will be released in the coming weeks or months.

Important Considerations Before Downloading

iOS 18 is compatible with the iPhone XS and newer models, and these devices must be updated to at least iOS 16.4 to download the developer beta as an over-the-air update. If you wish to revert to iOS 17 later, having a backup is essential.

How to Download and Install the iOS 18 Developer Beta

  • Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Tap on the Beta Updates option and select iOS 18 Developer Beta.
  • Return to the Software Update page and wait for the download option to appear.
  • Agree to Apple's terms and initiate the download.
  • Once the download is complete, the installation will begin.

Compatible iPhone Models

  • iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max

  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR

Key Features of iOS 18

  • Home Screen Customization: Relocate apps and widgets, customize colors and app icons in dark mode.
  • Personalized Control Center: New controls for connected home devices and quick customization options, accessible with a swipe-up gesture or from the lock screen.
  • App Lock: Lock individual apps and hide them in a secure folder.
  • Messaging Enhancements: RCS messaging support, emoji and sticker tapbacks, scheduled messages, text formatting, integrated text effects, and satellite messaging for iPhone 14 and later.
  • Mail Organization: On-device categorization of emails into primary, transactions, updates, and promotions (coming later this year).
  • Game Mode: Mac's game mode arrives on iPhone.
  • Photos Redesign: Simplified access and organization of photos, with built-in intelligence for creating collections.
