Apple has had the pieces of a smart home for years: HomePod speakers, Apple TV, the Home app and compatible accessories. The HomePod mini 2, Apple TV 4K and new Apple HomeView now give it a clearer three-device home lineup.
Siri AI connects them. It can answer current questions from the web, field follow-up queries and improve music discovery. With an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, it can also use context from its apps for personal requests.
Apple says personal content is shown only to the recognised user, when their paired iPhone or iPad is nearby and recently unlocked, and that requests are protected by on-device processing or Private Cloud Compute.
HomePod mini 2 Adds Visual Flair And Surround Sound
The HomePod mini 2 brings more than new colours. It comes in pink, green, blue, white and midnight, while a new Sound Glow effect turns the illuminated top surface into a reactive display.
The lighting pulses with bass and treble, matches the album art of the song playing, and shows animations for soundscapes such as rain. Apple’s S10 chip and computational audio also tune loudness, dynamic range and acoustics in real time.
The HomePod mini 2 can work alone, in a stereo pair or as part of a multiroom system. Its major upgrade comes with the Apple TV 4K. Users can pair four HomePod mini 2 speakers for surround sound, with Apple TV detecting their positions and calibrating timing and levels for the room.
Siri AI will reach the speaker through a future software update. With a compatible iPhone or iPad, it can find a song a friend recommended in a message, locate a recipe from an email or set a reminder tied to a location or calendar event.
Apple TV 4K Gets Faster And More Conversational
The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K uses Apple’s A19 chip, which delivers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to twice the GPU performance of the previous generation. It also gets a dedicated AV1 decoder for more efficient streaming.
Siri AI is the more meaningful update. It gets a full-screen interface for finding films and shows, with poster art and suggestions from the Apple TV app. Users can ask which Apple TV shows won Emmy Awards this year, then continue with follow-up questions.
While viewing a programme, answers appear in a compact overlay. When paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, it can also respond to personal requests, such as playing a series recommended by a friend.
Apple has added three far-field microphones for hands-free Siri commands. The Siri Remote gains Find My support with Precision Finding and a sound option, making it easier to locate.
Apple TV 4K also remains the home hub. It can show compatible video-doorbell alerts, control accessories and scenes, and offer camera-activity summaries. It supports four HomePod mini 2 speakers, or two matching pairs of HomePod 2nd-generation speakers, for surround sound.
Apple HomeView Becomes Apple’s Household Screen
Apple HomeView is a distinct launch because it gives Apple a dedicated smart display. Its 7-inch Liquid Retina display connects to a domed speaker base through an adjustable stainless-steel hinge. A separate wall-mounted version is designed for entryways and hallways.
The display supports True Tone, reaches 500 nits and dims at night. It also changes the information it shows based on how close a user is.
HomeView recognises up to six people by face, showing each person a private Home screen with their Messages, FaceTime, Calendar, Reminders and Find My information. Shared albums and music stay open to the household.
It can show up to nine camera feeds, control lights, thermostats, locks and blinds, and describe HomeKit Secure Video clips. Other features include FaceTime with Centre Stage, Intercom, Live Activities and hands-free recipe guidance.
