Amazon’s festive sale is throwing up laptop discounts of up to 50%, but a larger discount does not automatically mean a better buy. The sensible approach is to start with what you need the machine to do: heavy spreadsheets and office work, college assignments, travel-friendly everyday use or simply a bigger screen for watching content.
This shortlist covers five laptops across Snapdragon, AMD and Intel platforms. They are aimed at different kinds of users, so the right pick depends less on the percentage off and more on the sort of work you do every day.
1. Lenovo ThinkBook 16: The practical work-first option
The Lenovo ThinkBook 16 looks like the most straightforward choice here for someone who spends much of the day working across documents, browsers and multiple apps. It runs on AMD’s Ryzen 5 7535HS processor, paired with 8GB DDR5 RAM and a 512GB SSD.
Its 16-inch WUXGA IPS display gives you more room than a typical 14-inch laptop, which is useful when you are juggling spreadsheets, presentations and reference material. Lenovo also includes a backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader, making this a more productivity-led option than a basic student machine.
The only thing worth checking before buying is whether 8GB RAM is enough for your workload. For standard office work, it should be fine, but regular photo editing or demanding multitasking may call for more memory.
2. HP OmniBook 3: For people who carry their laptop everywhere
If portability matters more than screen size, the HP OmniBook 3 is the more appealing option. It has a 14-inch 2K display, 16GB LPDDR5x RAM and a 512GB SSD, all powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X platform.
That combination should suit students, writers and professionals who want a compact device for browsing, office work, streaming and everyday tasks. The 16GB RAM is particularly welcome at this level, as it gives the laptop more breathing room for keeping several apps and browser tabs open.
Its Snapdragon X chip also brings on-device AI capabilities through Qualcomm’s NPU, although that should be treated as a bonus rather than the primary reason to buy it. The lighter form factor and sharper display are likely to matter more on a daily basis.
3. Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3X: A larger-screen everyday laptop
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3X is another Snapdragon X-powered option, but it takes a slightly different route from the HP. It offers a bigger 15.3-inch WUXGA display while keeping the weight at around 1.55kg, which makes it a sensible middle ground for people who want more screen space without hauling around a heavy 16-inch machine.
It comes with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, so everyday productivity, browsing, streaming and college work should be comfortably covered. This is the one to look at if you find 14-inch laptops a little restrictive but do not need the more business-oriented features of the ThinkBook.
4. ASUS Vivobook 16: For entertainment and relaxed multitasking
The ASUS Vivobook 16 also uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X processor and offers 16GB RAM with a 512GB SSD. Its headline feature is the 16-inch display, which makes it a better fit for those who split their time between work and entertainment.
The larger panel should make a difference for movies, web browsing and working with several windows at once. It also includes Qualcomm Adreno graphics and a Hexagon NPU rated for up to 45 TOPS, covering the growing number of AI-assisted features built into Windows.
It is best suited to people who want a roomy all-rounder for home use, rather than someone who needs a compact laptop for a daily commute.
5. HP Professional 15: A no-nonsense office machine
The HP Professional 15 is the most traditional laptop in this selection. It comes with an Intel processor, 8GB DDR5 RAM, 512GB SSD storage and a 15.6-inch Full HD anti-glare display. There is also a fingerprint reader, Windows 11 Pro and Microsoft Office support.
This is not the machine to pick for flashy AI features or a premium display. Instead, it is built around the essentials for standard office use: email, documents, video calls, spreadsheets and web-based work. For a buyer who wants a familiar Windows laptop with a large display and business-friendly software, that may be exactly enough.
Before checking out, compare the final sale price, bank offers and RAM configuration rather than relying on the discount label alone. That will make it easier to separate a genuinely useful deal from a laptop that is simply cheaper than before.
