Punjab revives tourism with heritage restoration and grand festivals

Punjab invests ₹73 crore in heritage restoration, launching major tourism projects and cultural festivals like the Patiala Heritage Festival to attract visitors worldwide.

Punjab revives tourism with heritage restoration and grand festivals

Punjab, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is witnessing a significant transformation in tourism and cultural preservation.

Tourism Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond highlighted that in 2024, the state government allocated approximately ₹73 crore for restoring, modernizing, and preserving historical and cultural monuments. This substantial investment has revitalized key heritage sites and initiated projects aimed at boosting tourism.

As Punjab moves into 2025, its fairs and festivals are set to be celebrated on an even grander scale, attracting tourists from across the globe. The year began with vibrant events such as the Basant Mela in Ferozepur and the renowned Rural Olympics in Kila Raipur.

Adding to the festive spirit, the Patiala Heritage Festival, scheduled from February 13 to 16, promises an exciting lineup of activities, including heritage walks, a food festival, music evenings, an aero show, a nature walk, a flower show, and a fashion walk.

These events not only honor Punjab’s cultural legacy but also enhance its appeal as a premier tourist destination.

Minister Sond emphasized that under CM Mann’s leadership, Punjab is reclaiming its status as a major travel hotspot. The government's commitment to heritage restoration and tourism development has led to transformative initiatives that highlight Punjab’s deep-rooted history, vibrant traditions, and spiritual significance.

The ₹73 crore investment in 2024 has already brought remarkable improvements to historical landmarks, including the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Museum at Khatkar Kalan and the Saragarhi Museum in Ferozepur. Extensive renovations have also been carried out at Sarai Lashkari Khan in Khanna.

Enhancing Punjab’s cultural landscape, the Bhagwan Valmiki Ji Panorama was inaugurated with grandeur, while the permanent light and sound show at Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Summer Palace in Amritsar became a major attraction during the Rangla Punjab Festival.

Additionally, the government has prioritized the preservation of Sikh heritage by initiating the restoration of Jahaz Haveli, the historic residence of Dewan Todar Mall in Fatehgarh Sahib. “Dewan Todar Mall holds immense significance in Sikh history, and it is our collective duty to safeguard his legacy,” Sond remarked.

Punjab’s dedication to cultural and rural tourism has been recognized on a national level. Nawanpind Sardaran in Gurdaspur was honored as India’s Best Tourism Village (2023), while Hansali Farmstay in Fatehgarh Sahib secured top honors in the Agri-Tourism category in 2024.

With a strong focus on heritage preservation, cultural celebrations, and modern tourism strategies, Punjab is on a path to reestablish itself as a land of legends, vibrant festivals, and timeless traditions.
