Cabinet approves 8th Pay Commission for central government employees

The Union Cabinet has approved the creation of the Eighth Central Pay Commission, set to begin after the seventh pay commission’s tenure ends in 2026.

Cabinet approves 8th Pay Commission for central government employees

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission for central government employees.

Vaishnaw made this announcement during a press briefing in Delhi, where he shared cabinet decisions. He pointed out that since India's independence in 1947, seven pay commissions have been set up to revise the salaries and benefits of central government employees.

"For your awareness, our Prime Minister has approved the establishment of the 8th Central Pay Commission for all central government employees," Vaishnaw stated.

He also highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s commitment to maintaining a regular schedule for establishing pay commissions. The 7th Pay Commission, which began in 2016, is scheduled to complete its term in 2026.

"Following the commitment made by the Prime Minister to establish pay commissions in a regular rhythm, the 7th Pay Commission started in 2016, and its term will be completed in 2026," Vaishnaw added.

The minister emphasized that the 8th Pay Commission will be set up well before 2025 to allow ample time for reviewing and finalizing its recommendations. This early formation is expected to ensure that the government can implement changes effectively before the conclusion of the 7th Pay Commission's term.

The pay commission plays a vital role in determining salary structures, allowances, and benefits for government employees, with its recommendations significantly affecting millions of workers and pensioners.

The announcement of the 8th Pay Commission reflects the government's commitment to addressing the financial and professional needs of its workforce.

Central government employees can now anticipate a comprehensive review of their pay scales and benefits, which will be aligned with the country’s economic conditions and evolving government priorities
