The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is positioned as the everyday entertainment device, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is aimed squarely at power users and creators, while the Galaxy Z Flip 8 continues to refine the compact clamshell experience.
I had the opportunity to spend some time with all three devices ahead of their global debut at Galaxy Unpacked in London, and what stood out immediately wasn't any single specification. It was the level of refinement across the lineup. Every phone feels exceptionally well built, the redesigned hinge inspires far more confidence than before, and the crease has been reduced to the point where it quickly disappears from view during normal use.
None of these devices feels like a dramatic departure from its predecessor, but that's clearly not what Samsung was trying to achieve. Instead, this year's updates focus on improving the experience in ways you'll actually notice every day. Based on my first impressions, the company's latest foldables feel more polished, more purposeful and more complete than any generation before them.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 First Impressions: A New Form Factor
The Galaxy Z Fold series has traditionally been about pushing productivity on a smartphone, but the Galaxy Z Fold 8 feels like Samsung has shifted its priorities. After spending some time with it, I came away feeling that this is the Fold most people are likely to enjoy. Whether I was catching up on YouTube, reading long-form articles or simply browsing social media, the larger display made everything feel immersive without demanding that I constantly multitask.
That experience starts even before you unfold the device. Samsung has widened the 5.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover display, and the difference is immediately noticeable. Typing feels less cramped, replying to messages is easier, and I found myself using the outer screen far more often than I expected. The adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate, 428ppi pixel density and Vision Booster ensure it remains sharp, fluid and easy to read outdoors.
Opening the phone reveals a stunning 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, 403ppi pixel density and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Samsung has also added a low-reflection coating, making the display comfortable to use even under bright lighting. More importantly, the crease is subtle enough that it quickly fades into the background, allowing the display to take centre stage.
Samsung has also refined the hardware in meaningful ways. At 201g, this is the lightest Galaxy Fold yet, making it noticeably easier to hold for longer sessions. The redesigned Armour FlexHinge feels reassuringly robust, while the Flex Titanium display structure gives the phone a reassuring sense of rigidity.
Power comes from Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, paired with up to 16GB of RAM, as much as 1TB of storage and a 4,800mAh battery supporting 45W wired and 20W wireless charging. The dual 50MP cameras also make clever use of the foldable form factor through features like Dual Recording and My FanCam, adding another layer of versatility to what already feels like Samsung's most approachable Fold yet.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra First Impressions: The Productivity Flagship
If there was one device that showcased just how far Samsung's foldable engineering has come, it was the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. While the standard Fold 8 feels tailored for entertainment, the Ultra is clearly aimed at people who want to replace more of their laptop workflow with a smartphone. The larger display, flagship hardware and creator-focused features all reinforce that ambition.
The highlight is undoubtedly the expansive 8-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display. With a sharp 422ppi pixel density and an adaptive refresh rate that scales from 1Hz to 120Hz, it feels incredibly fluid whether you're juggling multiple apps, editing documents or simply browsing. The crease is still present, but like the standard Fold, it quickly fades into the background once you begin using the phone. The 6.5-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover display is equally impressive. It's spacious enough that I comfortably replied to emails, browsed the web and handled day-to-day tasks without constantly opening the device, while Vision Booster kept everything clearly visible outdoors.
Despite housing such a large display, the Fold 8 Ultra feels surprisingly manageable. At just 4.1mm thick when unfolded and weighing 215g, it's remarkably slim without sacrificing rigidity. Samsung's redesigned hinge feels reassuringly robust, making every fold feel smooth and confidence inspiring.
Under the hood, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy is paired with up to 16GB of RAM, as much as 1TB of storage and a larger 5,000mAh battery that supports 45W wired and 20W wireless charging. Samsung has also equipped the Ultra with a 200MP primary camera, alongside a 50MP ultra-wide and a 10MP 3x telephoto sensor. Features such as enhanced Nightography, 8K recording using Samsung's APV codec and Cine LUT support make it clear that content creators are a key part of the target audience.
After my brief hands-on, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra felt like Samsung's most refined foldable yet. More importantly, it finally delivers a premium foldable experience without many of the compromises that once came with the category.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 First Impressions: The Flip Finally Grows Up
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 doesn't rely on nostalgia to justify its existence. Instead, Samsung has refined almost every aspect of the experience, making this feel less like a fashionable alternative and more like a genuinely practical flagship. After spending some time with it, I came away convinced that the Flip series has become a lot more than a compact foldable.
The biggest change is the new 4.1-inch Super AMOLED FlexWindow. Running at up to 120Hz and enhanced by Vision Booster, it has evolved into a display that you can comfortably use without constantly unfolding the phone. During my hands-on, I replied to messages, checked navigation, interacted with Gemini and experimented with Samsung's AI-powered tools, all from the cover screen. Features such as Now Brief also surface useful contextual information at a glance, making the outer display feel genuinely functional rather than an afterthought.
Open the phone and you're greeted by a larger 6.9-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate and a sharp 400ppi pixel density. Colours look vibrant, animations feel exceptionally smooth, and, perhaps most importantly, the crease quickly disappears from your attention during everyday use. Samsung has also redesigned the hinge, which now feels sturdier and noticeably smoother when opening and closing the phone.
Despite these upgrades, the Flip 8 remains incredibly compact. Weighing just 180g and measuring only 6.1mm when unfolded, it's the slimmest Galaxy Flip Samsung has produced so far. It slips comfortably into a pocket, feels balanced in the hand and continues to showcase the biggest advantage of the clamshell design: portability without sacrificing a flagship experience.
Powering everything is Samsung's new Exynos 2600 processor, paired with 12GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage and a larger 4,300mAh battery with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. The 50MP primary camera and 12MP ultra-wide sensor are complemented by foldable-specific features including Flex Mode, Cover Screen Preview, Camcorder Grip, Super Steady and Horizontal Lock. Together, they make the Flip 8 one of the most enjoyable smartphones for casual photography and content creation.
Early Impressions
Samsung's latest foldables don't feel like products chasing the next big headline feature. Instead, they feel like the result of years of refinement, with every improvement focused on making the overall experience better. After my hands-on in London, what stood out most was how clearly each device fits into a different role. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 prioritises entertainment and everyday usability, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra caters to users who want a true productivity powerhouse, and the Galaxy Z Flip 8 continues to make the clamshell form factor more practical than ever.
Across the lineup, the hardware feels noticeably more polished. The redesigned hinges inspire greater confidence, the creases are far less noticeable than before, and One UI 9 appears far better optimised for foldables. That said, this was only an initial hands-on. I'll need considerably more time to evaluate camera performance, battery life and sustained performance before drawing any firm conclusions. Even so, Samsung's latest foldable family already feels like its most cohesive and well-rounded lineup to date.
