‘Squid Game' Season 2 teaser hints at new deadly games and chilling twists ahead

Netflix unveiled a new teaser for Season 2 of Squid Game during its Geeked Week event in Atlanta.

The clip begins with a tense Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) aiming a gun at an approaching masked figure. It then shifts to new participants gearing up for another life-or-death game, accompanied by a voiceover in Korean saying, ‘We're ready to start the game.’

Set three years after Gi-hun's victory in Squid Game, the season explores his decision to forgo going to the States, returning with a new resolve. He dives back into the mysterious survival game, facing another deadly challenge alongside new participants vying for the staggering prize of 45.6 billion won.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously told Deadline that the new season will depict Gi-hun on a quest for revenge, returning to the game as a transformed, more serious character.

Squid Game became Netflix’s most popular series of all time, racking up a record 1.65 billion views in the first 28 days after its 2021 premiere.

Lee Jung-jae made history as the first Asian man to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and the first to take home the award for a non-English show.

Meanwhile, Hwang Dong-hyuk became the first Asian to win an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

In a letter announcing the Season 2 premiere date, Dong-hyuk reflected, ‘It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with an incredible response worldwide, and so many unimaginable events occurred. On the first day of shooting Season 2, I thought, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game.’ It felt surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to return after three years.’

He continued, ‘Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1, is back in the game. Will he succeed? Front Man won’t be an easy opponent this time. The intense clash between their worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, set to premiere next year. I’m excited to see the seed we planted grow and flourish. We’ll do our best to deliver another thrilling ride!’

The series is produced by Firstman Studio, with Kim Ji-yeon serving as executive producer.

Squid Game Season 2 will premiere on December 26 on Netflix, while the third and final season is set to be released in 2025.
