<p>Netflix series &lsquo;IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack&rsquo;, directed by Anubhav Sinha and based on the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight by 5 Harkat-ul-Mujahideen terrorists, is facing significant backlash. Many social media users have accused the series of &lsquo;whitewashing&rsquo; the events, using hashtags like #BoycottNetflix, #BoycottBollywood, and #IC814 to criticize the creators for allegedly altering the hijackers' names.</p>
<p>The Ministry of Information &amp; Broadcasting has now summoned Netflix's content head over the controversy surrounding the series. Sources indicate that the ministry is expected to demand an explanation for the use of names like &lsquo;Bhola&rsquo; and &lsquo;Shankar&rsquo; for the terrorist hijackers in the series, as well as the portrayal of the terrorists.</p>
<p>According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the hijackers of IC 814 were identified as Ibrahim Athar from Bahawalpur, Shahid Akhtar Sayed from Karachi's Gulshan Iqbal, Sunny Ahmed Qazi from Karachi's Defence Area, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim from Akhtar Colony, Karachi, and Shakir from Sukkur city.</p>
<p>The MEA further states, &lsquo;...to the passengers, these hijackers came to be known respectively as (1) Chief, (2) Doctor, (3) Burger, (4) Bhola, and (5) Shankar, the names by which the hijackers invariably addressed one another.&rsquo;</p>
<p>Amid the ongoing criticism of the series, casting director Mukesh Chhabra defended the portrayal, stating that the terrorists used these nicknames for each other and that thorough research was conducted for the show.</p>
<p>&lsquo;I've seen so many tweets about the hijackers' names. We did proper research. These were the names they used&mdash;nicknames or fake names, however you want to call them. And thank you, everyone, for appreciating the ensemble cast,&rsquo; he wrote on X.</p>
<p>The series aligns with investigation reports and the book &lsquo;Flight into Fear: The Captain&rsquo;s Story&rsquo; by Srinjoy Chowdhury and Devi Sharan, the flight&rsquo;s captain.</p>
<p>However, some media outlets criticized the naming of the hijackers as insensitive and a misrepresentation of the truth.</p>
<p>As the controversy continues to escalate, with heated debates from both sides of the political spectrum, all eyes are on the government's next move after its meeting with the Netflix head. Whether it will result in a mere reprimand, a complete ban, or simply moving on, will be revealed on September 4 following the reported discussion.</p>

<p>The official statement shared on the Instagram handle of Zindagi reads, &lsquo;We, at Zindagi and Team Barzakh, extend our heartfelt gratitude to our global audience for their unwavering support for Barzakh - a show that was created to bring people together everywhere. But in light of the current public sentiment in Pakistan, we have made the decision to voluntarily withdraw Barzakh from YouTube Pakistan, effective August 9, 2024. This decision underscores our dedication to honouring our audiences without causing alienation. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and continued support.&rsquo;</p>
<p>A few days back, director Asim Abbasi was unfazed by the controversy, maintaining a clear stance: those offended by the storyline should simply avoid watching the show.</p>
<p>Responding to criticism for depicting homosexuality in &lsquo;Barzakh&rsquo; and his 2020 production, &lsquo;Churails&rsquo;, Abbasi stated, &lsquo;If you find queer/non-heteronormative storylines &lsquo;distasteful&rsquo;, please do not watch my content.&rsquo;</p>

Learn to say NO guys if it hampers our value system.&rsquo;</p>
<p>Another user commented that a Pakistani producer&rsquo;s idea of abstract art/cinema is &lsquo;basically shoving homosexuality down our throats.&rsquo;</p>
<p><strong>Hitting Back at Critics</strong></p>
<p>Designer Maria B, often criticized for her views on the LGBTQIA+ community, seized another chance to make controversial statements.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&lsquo;If God doesn&rsquo;t agree with it, how do the makers of the show?&rsquo; she stressed in one video, adding that &lsquo;the biggest HARAAM concepts of Zina, LGBTQ Qom e Lut, and child grooming are all being glamorized shamelessly in this drama!!&rsquo;</p>
<p>However, many defended the show. Sociologist and professor Nida Kirmani responded to a social media user who criticized the show for promoting behayai (shamelessness). &lsquo;Art is not made for closed-minded people like yourself. Stick to reading religious texts &amp; watching religious lectures on YouTube,&rsquo; Kirmani wrote.</p>
<p>Others pointed out the hypocrisy of homophobic commentators, noting that the abuse and torture of women in Pakistani dramas are widely accepted, but lines are only drawn when queer narratives are depicted.&nbsp;</p>
<p>People also praised Abbasi&rsquo;s bold stance. &lsquo;It&rsquo;s great to see Asim Abbasi standing his ground and not succumbing to right-wing bullies trying to moral police a work of art. This fight isn&rsquo;t easy! Also, glad that Barzakh is on an international platform and cannot be dictated by a regressive organization like PEMRA,&rsquo; an X user wrote.</p>
<p>This is not the first time a Pakistani show has faced backlash for depicting queer storylines. The country&rsquo;s 2022 Oscar entry, Joyland, and the 2023 TV show Sar-e-Rah also faced boycotts for similar reasons.</p>

<p>A TikTok account uploaded nearly 30 minutes of footage from the highly anticipated episode.</p>
<p>Despite swift removal efforts, duplicate clips quickly spread across social media. Fans hoping to avoid spoilers are advised to be cautious and mute relevant hashtags.</p>
<p>The TikTok account posted 14 videos from the Season 2 finale, each receiving thousands of views, according to Variety.</p>
<p>This isn&rsquo;t the series' first leak issue. A similar incident happened during Season 1, leading to speculation about a breach in the distribution chain. The final episode of Season 1 was also leaked online two days before its October 2022 premiere, with the leak traced to a distribution partner in Europe, the Middle East, or Africa, according to HBO.</p>
<p>Regarding the episode leak that occurred on Tuesday, HBO has not yet identified the exact source but confirmed it came from an "international third-party distributor." HBO is actively working to remove the leaked content.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a PIL was filed in the Delhi High Court on September 2, seeking a ban on &lsquo;IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack&rsquo;. The petition claims the series distorts facts by portraying the hijackers with Hindu names such as &lsquo;Bhola&rsquo; and &lsquo;Shankar,&rsquo; which are linked to Lord Shiva and may offend Hindu sentiments.</p>
<p>Surjit Singh Yadav, a farmer and president of Hindu Sena, has requested the court to direct the Centre and Maharashtra government to revoke the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) certificate and prohibit the series.</p>
<p>&lsquo;The distortion of crucial facts about the real identities of the hijackers not only misrepresents historical events but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and misinformation, warranting interference of this court to prevent further public misunderstanding and potential harm,&rsquo; the petition says. <p>Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the series was released on Netflix India on August 29. &lsquo;IC 814&rsquo;, which dramatizes the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 by the Pakistan-based terror group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, has stirred controversy on social media due to the use of Hindu code names for two of the hijackers in the series.</p>
