Emmys 2022: Lizzo breaks down in tears, says 'All I wanted to see was someone fat like me in media'

Singer Lizzo is officially an Emmy winner. Her show ‘Watch Out for the Big Grrrls’ won the award for Best Competition Program at the 74th edition of the prestigious ceremony on Monday night. While accepting the award, Lizzo broke down in tears and urged her backup dancers, selected from the TV series, to join her onstage. She said, ‘The trophy is nice but my emotion is for these people who are on this stage with me, the stories that they shared. They’re not that unique, they just don’t get the platform. … Let’s just tell more stories.’

She talked about what diverse representation in film and TV means to her.

‘When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. Someone fat like me. Black like me. Beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I would be like, ‘You’re going to see that person, but bitch, it’s going to have to be you,’ she said.

Lizzo concluded her speech by asking the audience to ‘make some noise’ for her Big Grrls.

‘One year ago, these women were filming this television show that would change their lives forever. They are Emmy award-winning superstars who are going on a world tour! Make some noise for my Big Grrrls. I love you so much. God bless y’all. This is for the big girls,’ said Lizzo.
