Mumbai Police register FIR against comedian Vir Das, Netflix on charges of copyright infringement

Stand-up comedian Vir Das is in legal trouble. The Cuffe Parade police filed a first information report (FIR) against him, two other persons, and the online streaming platform Netflix on charges of copyright rules violation following a complaint by a producer.

In his complaint, Ashvin Gidwani, the renowned theatre producer, alleged that 12 jokes from the show were copied from the script of an earlier show produced by him and performed by Das in 2010.

According to the official from Cuffe Parade police station, Gidwani mentioned that when he viewed a promo of a new show of Vir Das on Netflix in January 2020, he realised that some content had allegedly been copied from the previous show with a few changes.

A case was filed against Das, two other persons, and Netflix service under relevant provisions of the Copyright Act on November 4, PTI quoted the official as saying.

An investigation is underway and no arrest has been made so far.

According to PTI, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, a right-wing group approached the Bengaluru police on Monday and sought cancellation of Vir Das’ show, alleging that it will hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and show India in a bad light.
