This year&rsquo;s monsoon season ranks among the most destructive in recent memory, he said.
According to NDMA, 657 people -- 171 children, 94 women, and 392 men -- died and 929 others were injured in rain-related incidents across Pakistan since June 26.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the worst-hit province with 390 deaths -- 288 men, 59 children, and 43 women.
In Punjab, 164 people -- 70 children, 63 men, and 31 women -- died in rain-related incidents since June 26.
While Sindh recorded 28 deaths, including 14 children and 4 women; in Balochistan, 20 people, including 11 children, died.
At least 32 people, including eight children, died in Gilgit-Baltistan, while 15 people, including five minors, were killed as heavy rains lashed Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Eight people, including 4 children, died in Islamabad.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Asfandyar Khattak in a press conference on Sunday said around 150 people are missing from Buner and Shangla districts.
According to officials, 84 people, including 21 members of a family preparing for a wedding, were killed in flash floods triggered by cloudbursts in Buner.
Rescue operations are underway and five armed forces helicopters are at the disposal of the provincial government, Khattak said, adding that the provincial government has released PKR 1.5 billion for relief activities.
The PDMA DG said 33 trucks of non-food items had reached Buner, eight had reached Swat, and seven had reached Bajaur, while additional supplies were also being dispatched.
Meanwhile, investigators have recovered the black box of the helicopter that crashed during a rescue operation near Peshawar, officials said on Monday.
The MI-17 helicopter had crashed on August 15 while transporting relief supplies to flood-affected residents in the Salarzai area of Bajaur, resulting in the death of all five crew members.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed federal ministers to supervise relief operations in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Under the PM&rsquo;s Relief Package, truckloads of supplies are being dispatched to the affected districts. The relief goods include food rations, tents, and medicines, which are being handed over to the respective district administrations, officials said.

However, 12 sites in Assam, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh were flagged for &ldquo;above-normal&rdquo; flood situations, where water levels have crossed the warning threshold but remain below danger levels.
In Assam, the Kushiyara River in Karimganj and the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat in Jorhat are among those nearing concern levels.
Bihar remains under observation, with elevated water levels in the Kosi at Baltara, Bagmati at Benibad, and Gandak at Dumariaghat.
Uttar Pradesh is closely monitoring four sites, including the Ganga at Fatehgarh and Kachhla Bridge, Ghagra at Elginbridge, and Gandak at Khadda, which touched the warning level at 95 metres.
Odisha reported above-normal levels at Mathani Road Bridge and Rajghat on the Subarnarekha, both in Baleshwar district.
In Tamil Nadu, water levels at Musiri on the Cauvery River also crossed the warning level.
In terms of reservoir and barrage inflows, the CWC issued inflow forecasts for 23 sites across 10 states, including Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
The majority of Karnataka&rsquo;s major reservoirs, including Almatti, Narayanapur, and Tungabhadra, are experiencing rising or steady trends with high inflow volumes.
The Rengali Reservoir in Odisha and Durgapur Barrage in West Bengal also witnessed significant inflows, raising alerts for potential downstream impacts.
Despite active monsoon conditions, the CWC confirmed that none of the river stations have reached or exceeded their previous highest flood levels.&nbsp;

According to the weather department's extended-range forecast, the primary rain-bearing system will cover the remaining parts of the country in the following week, well ahead of the usual dates.

Monsoon advanced quickly from June 16 to June 18 due to two low-pressure systems forming on June 17 -- one over West Bengal and the other over Gujarat.
The rain system usually makes its onset over Kerala by June 1, reaches Mumbai by June 11 and covers the entire country by July 8. It starts retreating from northwest India around September 17 and withdraws completely by October 15.
Meteorologists say the date of monsoon onset does not directly correlate with the total seasonal rainfall. An early or delayed arrival in Kerala or Mumbai does not necessarily indicate similar progress in other parts of the country.
They say monsoon is influenced by complex global, regional and local factors, and is marked by significant variability.
In May, the IMD had forecast that India was likely to receive 106 per cent of the long-period average (LPA) rainfall of 87 cm during the June-September monsoon season. Rainfall between 96 per cent and 104 per cent of this 50-year average is considered "normal".
Above-normal rainfall is expected in most parts of the country, except Ladakh, adjoining areas of Himachal Pradesh, the northeast and some parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
Some isolated areas in Punjab, Haryana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu may record below-normal rainfall.
Monsoon is crucial for India's agriculture sector, which supports the livelihood of around 42 per cent of the population and contributes 18.2 per cent to the GDP.

The monsoon core zone includes parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and nearby areas. This region gets most of its rain during the Southwest Monsoon and depends heavily on it for agriculture.
Northwest India is likely to receive normal rainfall, while the Northeast may see below-normal rain. Central and south peninsular India are expected to record above-normal rainfall, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

"The new venues for the Playoffs were decided by the IPL Governing Council keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters," said the BCCI in a statement.
"Similar to the playoffs stage, an additional one hour will be allocated to the playing conditions for the remaining matches of the league stage, starting Tuesday, 20 May," the statement added.
Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator will take place in Mullanpur on May 29 and 30 while Ahmedabad will stage Qualifier 2 and final on June 1 and 3. Ahmedabad had earlier hosted the IPL final in 2022 and 2023.

Amid the ongoing monsoon season in India, many states are reeling under harsh rains and flash floods. On the 8th of July India's financial capital, Mumbai received more than 300 mm (11.8 inches) of rain in six hours, crippling life of 12 million people.
Similarly, the northeastern Assam state was hit by floods induced by heavy rains, killing at least 66 people and affecting 3 million people in four districts.
India relies heavily on monsoons for agricultural purposes, bringing a sight of relief for the farmers. But in the last few decades, the same weather pattern has become a worry as it brings widespread destruction and displacement.
A study by American Geophysical Union, published in 2020, showed that the most devastating floods in the past two decades like the Kerala floods in August 2018, the Chennai floods in 2015, the Uttarakhand floods in June 2013, Leh floods in June 2010 and Mumbai floods in June 2005 had a same weather phenomenon in common.
The floods were caused when multiple low-pressure systems occurred together spatially and temporally to create a deep convention system and led to large-scale heavy rainfall.
Apart from climate change, many poorly planned developmental projects have caused catastrophic climatic events in India in the recent past.
In 2023, the flash floods in Himachal Pradesh killed about 150 people and caused the destruction of property worth 10, 000 crores. Many experts opined that the rampant hydropower projects and uncontrolled tourist influx contributed to the extreme weather events and made the landscape unstable.
Similarly, improper dam management in the eastern Vidarbha region in Maharashtra caused flooding in the area in 2020, damaging nearly 90 hectares of farmland and submerging 4 districts.
Over the years, the monsoon-related deaths and floods have only increased. In 2023, the then Minister of State for Jal Shakti ministry Bishweswar Tadu said that 17,422 people have died due to floods from 2012 to 2021. The highest number of deaths stood at 2754 in 2019. It also caused massive destruction to crops, houses and public utilities, with the government incurring losses amounting to Rs 2.76 lakh crore.
Water bodies encroached
One of the reasons being attributed to flash floods is the encroachment of water bodies, heavy rainfalls, insufficient drainage and siltation in rivers.
A report by the Jal Shakti Ministry revealed that more than 2,400 water bodies have been encroached. Surprisingly, 97.1% of encroachment has taken place in rural areas. Water bodies act as natural reservoirs as they soak in excess rainwater and prevent flooding in adjoining areas. However. rampant construction has caused these natural wetlands to go extinct.
How is Indian govt preparing
The Central government in its XII Plan, approved the continuation of &ldquo;Flood Management Programme&rdquo; with an outlay of Rs.10,000 crore. Under this, the government has been developing and rejuvenating water bodies across the country, carrying out intensive afforestation, and creating awareness.
With global warming and harsh weather events becoming more frequent than ever before, it begs the question of whether India, with a 1.43 billion population, is taking concrete steps to tackle the new reality of hash monsoons and flash floods.
