WhatsApp for Windows now works without a smartphone

Previously, Windows users had to download WhatsApp's web-based desktop app or use the messaging service through a web browser.

The new Windows client for WhatsApp no longer requires you to connect your phone in order to send, receive, and sync messages. The redesigned Windows app is now available for download via the Microsoft Store, according to an update on WhatsApp's website.

Previously, Windows users had to download WhatsApp's web-based desktop software or use a web browser to access the messaging service. WhatsApp adds that the new app is native to Windows, which should make it faster and more responsive.

The revamped WhatsApp features a much cleaner UI compared to the previous version of the programme, but it doesn't appear significantly different otherwise. The most significant change is that you no longer need to have your phone online in order to synchronise messages between your mobile device and the desktop software.

WhatsApp claims it is actively developing a native version for macOS as well.
