WhatsApp could soon let group admins delete messages for everyone

According to a report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a feature that will let admins of groups to delete any messages for all users in the group. This moderation feature would bring WhatsApp in line with competitors like Telegram who already offer it.

A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo shows that a message deleted by a group admin, displays placeholder text that says “This was deleted by an admin.” Do note that this feature is still in internal testing, and thus the exact specifics and the placeholder text could still change.

WhatsApp group admin moderation powers

This feature would give WhatsApp group admins more meaningful content moderation powers, to curb the spread of fake news, harassment, or harmful content on WhatsApp groups. Until now, group admins could remove participants from group chats, but could not delete content for other users.

It is not currently known whether group admins will also be able to delete older messages.
