Twitter is experimenting with a new method of tweet sharing in India by adding a "Share To WhatsApp" button beneath posts.

Under each tweet, the WhatsApp share button will replace the standard share button, which currently enables bookmarking, sending through Direct Message, copying the URL to the tweet, and sharing on other social networking sites.

This is hardly shocking considering WhatsApp's popularity in India. The chat app has over 400 million users in the country and is one of the most popular apps for sharing material with friends and family.

Twitter is therefore attempting to leverage the popularity of the messaging app owned by Meta to attract additional users to its platform.

Twitter is not the first social network in India to test the "Share To WhatsApp" feature. Local language social network ShareChat, which is sponsored by the likes of Twitter and Google, features a similar button next to each of its postings.

While Twitter typically limits its tests to a select group of users, the majority of Twitter for Android users in India will have access to this new test. However, considering that it is an experiment, the platform can abandon this new sharing tool at any time.
