PlayStation VR2 launch timeline confirmed

The PlayStation VR2, Sony's next-generation virtual reality headset, will be available in early 2023.

Sony has been slowly releasing information over the past few months, including additional capabilities such as the see-through mode and a broadcast mode, enhancing the 2016-launched first-generation PlayStation VR gear. Sony wants to take virtual reality gaming to the next level with the PS VR2.

PlayStation VR2 specifications

Although PlayStation has published hardware specifications for its forthcoming virtual reality device, it has not yet been given a price. Sony claims that the PS VR2 will include an OLED display with a resolution of 4,000 x 2,040 that can operate at 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rates, allowing for smooth navigation while gaming.

The headgear is also expected to have a field of view (FOV) of 110 degrees, the same as its predecessor. Also featured is a 1080p theatrical mode that streams the PS5 user interface and all non-VR games onto a virtual screen at 24Hz or 60Hz.

PlayStation has announced that 20 "big" games will be available at launch for PS VR2, one of which was displayed at CES 2022. Horizon Call of the Mountain, a spin-off of the critically successful Horizon Zero Dawn, is being developed especially for the PlayStation VR2 by Guerilla Games. Resident Evil Village and No Man's Sky are included as well.

Sony has not disclosed the PlayStation VR2's weight, but the company has stated that users would be able to view their surroundings while wearing the headset. Using the function button on the headset or the Card in the UI's control centre, the see-through vision can be toggled on and off.

PlayStation has integrated front-facing cameras inside the visor, allowing players to navigate in real-world environments and locate their PS VR2 sense controller while wearing the headset. Using the PlayStation 5 HD camera and the bundled Broadcast mode, you may stream your games to platforms such as Twitch and YouTube.
