$17,000 Apple Watch Edition Gold model is now obsolete

Apple's first-generation Apple Watch is now obsolete, affecting repairs and updates. This includes the premium 18-karat gold version, aligning with Apple's 7-year policy.

$17,000 Apple Watch Edition Gold model is now obsolete

Apple's landmark move into the wearable sector took a significant turn recently. The Apple Watch, which made waves upon its debut in 2015, has seen its pioneering model enter the "obsolete" category, encompassing even the premium 18-karat gold variant.

Status Update: Apple Watch First Generation

On September 30, Apple updated its list of obsolete products to include all first-generation Apple Watch models, featuring the special $17,000 Apple Watch Edition. MacRumors reported that the Apple Watch launched in 2015 is now considered outdated.

Implications of the Obsolescence Status

For owners of the Apple Watch Series 0, this change in status means an end to the Apple Watch repair and service at both Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Provider locations. Furthermore, securing Apple Watch parts for these models will become challenging as Apple discontinues its support.

Software Support Lifecycle

It's essential to note that the Apple Watch software support for the Series 0 ended in 2018. The watchOS 4.3.2 marked the last software update for these first-gen timepieces.

Range of Discontinued Models

The lineup of now-obsolete models is comprehensive. It encompasses all variations of the Apple Watch Series 0, whether they were 38mm or 42mm in size. The collection includes both aluminum and stainless steel versions, and even the Hermès variants.

The Luxurious Gold Edition

Perhaps the most talked-about model now labeled obsolete is the 18-karat gold Apple Watch, which was available for a staggering $17,000 in the US market. Upon its release, this luxurious timepiece graced the wrists of many celebrities, symbolizing Apple's ambitious entry into the luxury watch domain. The brand even crafted a gold link bracelet that, intriguingly, never became available to the public. However, Apple decided to discontinue the solid-gold version within a year, shifting its focus to more affordable ceramic and titanium models.

Apple's Classification of Obsolescence

According to Apple's standards, a product that hasn't been in distribution for over seven years is deemed technologically obsolete. Since the Apple Watch first generation stopped distribution in September 2016, it appropriately earned its obsolete status seven years later.

Recalling the 2015 Launch

Looking back at its launch, the Apple Watch in 2015 was pitched as Apple's "most personal device ever." The watch showcased features like a Retina display with Force Touch and a Taptic Engine. Moreover, the device came equipped with 11 watch faces and included apps such as Activity and Workout, highlighting its ability to monitor daily activities and fitness metrics.
