Microsoft top target for cybercriminals for second year in a row

Microsoft remains the prime target for cybercriminals, ranking as the most spoofed brand for the second year in a row, according to a CyberShield report. The largest data breach of 2020 affected 10,880 records through Cam4. The report also highlighted Google, Yahoo, Facebook, and Outlook as the other top five most spoofed brands, showcasing the prevalence of spoofing attempts on major tech companies.
CEO of BanklessTimes.com, explained that threat actors have shifted their focus to larger technology brands due to the adaptability of phishing kits in altering the spoofed brand.
Geographically, the Asia-Pacific region experienced the highest number of data breaches, predominantly in Japan with a staggering 91% of attacks. Europe followed, with the United Kingdom contributing to 43% of breaches. Conversely, the Middle East observed a significant decrease in data breaches compared to the previous year.
The CyberShield report emphasises the need for continuous vigilance against online threats. Verifying personal information requests, avoiding suspicious links and attachments, and maintaining strong, unique passwords are crucial precautions against spoofing attempts.
