Meta to soon launch WhatsApp helpline to combat AI-generated fake content in India

Meta and the Misinformation Combat Alliance will soon launch a WhatsApp helpline for Indian users to report deepfakes, available in multiple languages, with a focus on detection, prevention, reporting, and awareness.

Meta to soon launch WhatsApp helpline to combat AI-generated fake content in India

Meta, in collaboration with the Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA), is set to introduce a pioneering WhatsApp helpline aimed at combating the growing menace of deepfakes in India.

Scheduled for a public rollout in March 2024, this initiative marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by AI-generated misinformation.

Language Support and Accessibility

The WhatsApp helpline will initially offer support in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, making it accessible to a broad spectrum of the Indian population.

Meta plans to extend this support to more regional languages, ensuring wider reach and effectiveness in the fight against deepfakes.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Misinformation

The initiative is grounded in four main objectives: detection, prevention, reporting, and awareness. By employing a comprehensive strategy, Meta and the MCA aim to curb the spread of false information and enhance the digital literacy of users.

Fact-Checking and Verification

To ensure the authenticity of information circulating on social media, the MCA will establish a dedicated central deepfake analysis unit.

This unit will scrutinize viral trends and individual reports, distinguishing between genuine and AI-generated content. Messages identified as fake or misleading will be flagged to inform and protect the public.

Global Collaboration Against Deepfakes

The launch of the WhatsApp helpline aligns with a broader global initiative, where 20 leading tech companies, including OpenAI, Microsoft, and Adobe, have pledged to combat AI-generated deepfakes.

These efforts include filtering deceptive content and raising public awareness about the pitfalls of fake information.

As AI-powered tools become increasingly accessible, regulating deepfake content poses a significant challenge. Meta's decision to label AI-generated images on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads represents another layer of defense against the proliferation of misleading content.
