Google settles location tracking lawsuit for $39.9 Million, commits to transparency

Google has agreed to pay Washington state $39.9 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of misleading consumers regarding its location tracking practices. The settlement resolves allegations that Google deceived people into thinking they had control over the collection and use of their personal data, when in fact the company could profit from the data even if tracking technology was disabled. As part of the settlement, Google is required to provide more transparency about its tracking practices and create a detailed webpage describing them. Washington's Attorney General stated that the resolution holds the powerful corporation accountable for its unethical tactics. Google denied any wrongdoing and had previously agreed to pay $391.5 million to resolve similar claims from multiple US states. The settlement with Washington follows Arizona's $85 million settlement with Google in October. In response, Google referred to its previous statement acknowledging concerns regulators raised and changes to outdated policies.
