I recently got my hands on the Acer Swift Edge 16 featuring the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor. Though the specific variant I reviewed isn’t currently available in India, it gives us a glimpse into what an AI-powered laptop from Acer offers in the mid-range budget segment. Here's what you can expect if this model eventually makes its way to India.

Acer Swift Edge 16: Design

The first thing you notice about the Acer Swift Edge 16 is its lightweight nature, weighing just 1.23 kg. This is partly due to its integrated GPU, which doesn't demand much space. However, the lightweight design does come with a downside—it feels a bit flimsy. The hinges aren’t the toughest, and applying a bit of pressure to the body reveals a slight bend and lack of resistance.

The laptop features a simple, classic design in black with a matte finish, consistent with other Acer Swift Edge models. It's quite resistant to fingerprints if you avoid touching it with oily fingers. The Acer logo can also be seen displayed on the top.

On the sides, there’s a wide array of ports, including two 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, one USB 3.0, another HDMI 3.2 port for charging, a Micro SD slot, and a headphone jack. While it lacks a Thunderbolt port, it does have an additional Kensington lock for extra security.

The keyboard is comprehensive, featuring a separate number pad on the right side. All the keys are backlit and well-spaced, reducing the chances of ghost touches. Despite not being a gaming laptop, the classic design with backlit keys in white monochrome and a minimalist look complements its intended use for light to moderate gaming and content creation. The keys are soft to touch, and the glass-finished trackpad feels smooth as your fingers glide across it.

Acer Swift Edge 16: Display

The Acer Swift Edge 16 boasts a 16-inch 3.2K OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This ensures smooth visuals, and the OLED display provides accurate blacks in vibrant visuals. The CineCrystal technology adds a glossy finish and makes the display easy on the eyes. Although the brightness is limited to 500 nits, the visuals remain immersive. The dual speakers at the bottom are also quite loud, enhancing the audio-visual experience for content consumption and gaming.

Acer Swift Edge 16: Performance and Battery

Powered by the Ryzen 7 7840U processor with AMD Radeon 780M integrated GPU, the Acer Swift Edge 16 is built on the Ryzen 4 architecture, featuring 8 cores and 16 threads. It features up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 2TB of SSD storage, though mine was capped at 16GB RAM and 475GB SSD.

It's still suitable for tasks like video and photo editing and is powerful enough for light gaming.

Benchmark tests place this chipset competitively. On Geekbench 6, it scored 1251 for the single-core test and 5734 for the multi-core test. On Cinebench R23, it scored 16810 in the single-core test and 6671 in the multi-core test. The graphics prowess was confirmed with an OpenCL score of 19540 on Geekbench.

While not the most powerful laptop, casual gaming is feasible. For instance, playing Valorant at 3.2K resolution yielded an average of 80 FPS, with higher FPS at lower resolutions like 1080p. The laptop doesn’t heat up much even after continuous gaming.Though the fans are a bit loud, they effectively keep the system cool.

Though Acer claims a battery life of 9 hours, the laptop’s 53Wh battery lasted about 6-7 hours on average, depending on usage. It takes around 2 hours to fully charge with the 65W charger included.

Acer Swift Edge 16: AI Features

The Acer Swift Edge 16 jumps on the AI bandwagon, but let's not get carried away calling it an AI powerhouse. Running Windows 11 Home, it comes with Microsoft Copilot preinstalled, so you'll get a handy digital assistant. The AI features are mostly about making you look good on video calls: automatic framing, eye contact magic, and background blurring for that professional look. You can also tweak your video quality with Windows Studio Effects, adjusting brightness, contrast, sharpness, and saturation. So, while it's not exactly brimming with AI marvels, it has enough tricks to make your Zoom calls a bit fancier.

Acer Swift Edge 16: Price and Verdict

While this variant of the Acer Swift Edge 16 with the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U isn't yet available in India, it's currently priced at around $1000 (approx Rs 84,000) in other markets. It strikes a decent balance of features and performance for the price. Sure, the battery life could use a little boost, but the impressive display and solid performance make up for it. The AI features are limited for now, but fingers crossed Acer will throw in more AI magic down the line.
