Apple to launch iPhone SE+ 5G & iPad Air in spring, VR headset delayed: reports

Multiple reports have speculated on Apple’s slate of product launches in 2022. While one source has claimed that Apple will launch a new iPhone SE model, dubbed the iPhone SE+ 5G, alongside a new iPad Air, another source says that the company’s plans for a Mixed Reality headset have been postponed.

Apple iPhone SE+ 5G and iPad Air

According to Ross Young, the CEO of display market intelligence firm Display Supply Chain Consultants, Apple will launch a new model of the iPhone SE in 2022. This will be called the iPhone SE+ 5G.

Young said that the iPhone SE+ 5G will retain the 4.7-inch LCD display of the current iPhone SE, also keeping the design of the phone. It will pack the A15 Bionic SoC, with 5G support. It may offer 3GB RAM, and an improved single 12MP camera at the back.

Meanwhile, Japan's Apple-focussed news site Macotakara has reported that Apple is planning to launch the iPad Air (5th gen) alongside the iPhone SE+ 5G. The new iPad Air is claimed to offer a similar design to the new iPad mini, with the A15 Bionic chipset, 5G support, and an improved front-facing camera with Center Stage support.

Apple Mixed Reality Headset

According to a report in Bloomberg, Apple’s Mixed Reality Headset, which the company had hoped to launch this year, has been pushed to 2023.

Apple has reportedly been working on an AR/VR headset since 2015, and has run into challenges with overheating, cameras, and software of the device. As a result, it will miss the expected launch date of WWDC this year, and may be unveiled at the end of 2022, or in 2023.
