Ravi Shastri Backs Washington Sundar as India's Future Test All-Rounder

Ravi Shastri sees Washington Sundar as a promising all-rounder for India in Tests. Sundar's skills with both bat and ball have impressed Shastri, who suggests a higher batting position for him.

Ravi Shastri Backs Washington Sundar as India's Future Test All-Rounder

Manchester, Jul 22 (PTI): Ravi Shastri, the former head coach of the Indian cricket team, has expressed his belief in Washington Sundar's potential to emerge as India's next "genuine" Test all-rounder. Shastri attributes this to Washington's effectiveness as a bowler in home conditions and his innate talent with the bat. At 25, the off-spinner made an impactful Test debut at Gabba in 2021 and has played in 11 Tests, scoring 545 runs and claiming 30 wickets.

Shastri, speaking on 'The ICC Review,' stated, "I've always admired Washington. From the very first day, I saw him, I was convinced he's the man. He has the makings of a true all-rounder for India for many years." He highlighted that Washington's appearances in red-ball cricket should have been more frequent, considering his capability on spin-friendly pitches at home.

“He's still just 25. I believe he should have been given more Test cricket opportunities. On turning tracks in India, he's extremely effective, as New Zealand discovered when they played against us. He even outperformed some of the senior spinners. He bowled exceptionally well and can certainly bat,” Shastri remarked. In the 2024 home Test series against New Zealand, Washington emerged as the joint highest wicket-taker, with 16 wickets in four innings.

Ravi Shastri, who was at the helm during Washington's Test debut, also lauded his batting capability, suggesting that the Tamil Nadu player could be moved up the batting order. “He's a naturally adept batsman. He doesn't belong at number 8 but can be promoted to number 6 in the lineup soon.” In the current series against England, Washington has significantly contributed with both bat and ball. At Lord’s, his impressive 4/22 in the second innings, which included prized wickets of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jamie Smith, tilted the match in India’s favor.

Shastri further added that Washington’s technical skills make him valuable in overseas conditions as well. “Once he gains confidence, I believe his game will only improve. Even overseas, he displays drift, pace, and strength in his fingers, alongside fitness. He’s capable of bowling long spells and controlling the game when necessary.”
