Former world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit announces retirement from tennis due to back condition

Estonian tennis player Anett Kontaveit, a former world number 2, has made the difficult decision to retire from professional tennis due to a back condition. The 27-year-old revealed that her condition prevents her from engaging in full-scale training or continuing her competitive career. Kontaveit shared that Wimbledon will mark her final tournament in the sport.

Kontaveit's most notable achievement in a grand slam tournament was reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 2020. Reflecting on her tennis journey, she expressed gratitude for the lessons and experiences the sport has provided her.

Taking to Instagram, Kontaveit stated, "It has been important for me to bring the Estonian flag to the tennis courts and to be able to play in front of my supporters and fans all over the world. I am ready for new challenges after my last effort as a professional tennis player."

The tennis player's retirement comes as she grapples with lumbar disc degeneration, a condition characterized by pain, numbness, and tingling sensations.

With Wimbledon set to commence on July 3, Kontaveit's decision marks the conclusion of her competitive journey just before the prestigious tournament.

The official draw for Wimbledon is scheduled to take place on June 30.
