Abhimanyu Easwaran Focuses on Bengal's Ranji Trophy Campaign

Kolkata, Oct 14 (PTI) — Abhimanyu Easwaran has decided to move forward after being overlooked for the Test series against West Indies and South Africa. His focus is now firmly on leading Bengal in their Ranji Trophy opener against Uttarakhand, set to take place at Eden Gardens on Wednesday.

Having been part of India's recent Test tour of England without getting a chance to play a game, Abhimanyu is back with the Bengal squad and is captaining the team for the second time. In the 2019-20 Ranji season, he led the side to a runner-up finish, ultimately losing the final to Saurashtra.

"Everybody has their own journey, and ups and downs are part of everyone's life," said Abhimanyu on the eve of their Ranji opener. "Right now, that phase is behind me. Selection isn't in my control, so my focus is entirely on the Ranji Trophy. I'm very excited to begin the game tomorrow and am super motivated," said the prolific Bengal batter, who is just 46 runs away from joining the 8000-runs club in first-class cricket.

In preparation for the match, Abhimanyu engaged in intense batting sessions and rigorous drills at the nets. Despite being dropped from the India Test squad, he intends to make the most of Bengal's Ranji Trophy campaign. "I don't set specific targets for myself. I just try to play a match," he said when questioned about his personal goals for the season.

Discussing his second stint as captain, Abhimanyu emphasized maintaining simplicity and clarity. "We try to keep things as straightforward as possible, ensuring good communication and clarity about our plans for the players. Everyone is different, so we aim to get the best out of each player."

Abhimanyu also lauded seamer Mohammed Shami, who has returned to full fitness and is bowling effectively. "He is one of the best fast bowlers who have ever played for India, and I believe he will perform well here too. He bowled effectively at the nets today. He is fit and eager to contribute to Bengal's success. The experience Shami Bhai brings is invaluable," he said. "Having played so much international cricket successfully, both in India and abroad, his experience will be beneficial for the team," Abhimanyu concluded.

Shami fitter than last year, says Bengal coach Shukla

Bengal coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla also praised Shami's return. "Last year he had a limp after surgery, but now he's fully fit and running without any issues. We've discussed this among the support staff, and I can confirm Shami is 100 percent fit, even fitter than the previous year," Shukla stated.
