Watch: Why England all-rounder Tom Curran was suspended for 4 BBL matches for intimidating umpire

England all-rounder Tom Curran, Sydney Sixers' overseas star in the Big Bash League, has been handed a four-match suspension after being found guilty of intimidating an umpire. Despite this ruling, the Sixers have signaled their intent to contest the decision.

The incident leading to Curran's ban occurred before the Sixers' game against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 11 in Launceston. The situation unfolded when Curran attempted a practice run-up on the pitch during warm-ups, leading to an altercation with the fourth umpire.

Cricket Australia (CA) detailed the incident in a statement, explaining that Curran initially completed a practice run-up, partially encroaching onto the pitch, despite the fourth umpire's instructions against it. Curran then proceeded to the other end of the wicket, attempting another run-up.

The statement elaborated, "Curran attempted to perform a practice run-up and run at pace straight towards the umpire who stood in the bowling crease facing Curran. The umpire stepped to his right to avoid the risk of collision."

Following this, Curran faced charges from match referee Bob Parry under Article 2.17 of the Cricket Australia code of conduct. This article pertains to "intimidation or attempted intimidation of an umpire, match referee or medical personnel whether by language or conduct (including gestures) during a match". Curran disputed the charge but was ultimately adjudged guilty, resulting in a four-match suspension.

As a result of this ban, the 28-year-old Curran will be absent from the Sixers' lineup for their upcoming match against the Adelaide Strikers at the SCG, as well as their encounters with the Stars (December 26), Thunder (December 30), and Heat (January 1).
