Nicolas Pooran announces retirement from all forms of cricket

West Indies wicket-keeper batter Nicholas Pooran has announced his retirement from international cricket, stepping away from all three formats.

The 29-year-old made the announcement late Monday night via social media, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career.

Pooran’s decision comes just days after South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen, another T20 stalwart, also bid farewell to international cricket.

The back-to-back exits of high-profile players have intensified the debate around the growing shift towards franchise cricket, with several cricketers now choosing to prioritise league commitments over national duty—even during the prime of their careers.

Pooran, who has previously captained the West Indies, took to Instagram to share an emotional statement.

"After much thought and reflection, I've decided to announce my retirement from international Cricket," Pooran wrote.

He went on to reflect on what the sport has meant to him:
"This game we love has given and will continue to give so much - joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies. Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it's hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart."

In his message, Pooran also expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey.

"To the fans - thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion," he said.

"To my family, friends, and teammates - thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all."

Pooran began his international career in 2016 and last turned out for the West Indies in an ODI in July 2023. He was part of the squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup and played his final T20I for the national side in December that year. Between 2021 and 2022, he also took on leadership duties, captaining the West Indies in 23 T20I matches.

Despite stepping away from international duties, Pooran expressed his enduring support for West Indies cricket, stating that he will continue to be a loyal fan and well-wisher of the team in all formats.

Though he has ended his international career, Pooran reiterated his enduring connection with West Indies cricket.

"Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead."

Pooran leaves international cricket as West Indies’ most capped T20I player, having featured in 106 matches. He is also the team's highest run-scorer in the format, amassing 2,275 runs.

While he steps away from representing the West Indies, Pooran is expected to continue playing franchise cricket globally.
