India likely to drop Sudharsan for Sundar

Indian team strategizes by potentially replacing Sai Sudharsan with Washington Sundar for balance. Other changes include Akash Deep for Bumrah. Strategic shifts aim to enhance all-round capabilities.

India likely to drop Sudharsan for Sundar

The Indian cricket team is expected to make several adjustments to their playing XI for the second Test against England. First Test debutant Sai Sudharsan is likely to be dropped from the team. According to a report in the Indian Express, team management is prioritizing adding all-round options, with spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar being a strong contender for Sudharsan’s spot. Head coach Gautam Gambhir is noted to be a keen admirer of Sundar’s abilities.

This decision regarding Sudharsan seems to be driven by the need for team balance rather than his performance. Sudharsan did not have an impressive debut, but discussions suggest the focus is on bringing more versatility into the lineup. The potential removal of Sudharsan after just one game has stirred potential controversy, as it was his debut match.

In the event Sudharsan is replaced, Karun Nair is likely to move to the No. 3 batting position, while captain Shubman Gill is set to continue at No. 4. Despite speculations of Sudharsan carrying a shoulder injury, he was seen practicing vigorously in the nets, dispelling those concerns.

Additionally, the team might see Nitish Reddy brought in for Shardul Thakur, and Akash Deep potentially replacing Jasprit Bumrah. Meanwhile, specialist spinner Kuldeep Yadav is expected to remain on the bench.

In a pre-match press conference, Indian skipper Shubman Gill hinted at the possibility of adding a second spinner. "If fast bowlers are not creating enough chances, then we feel that maybe a second spinner on these kinds of wickets will at least create pressure until the second new ball," Gill noted. Given the conditions in the previous match, a similar pitch in the upcoming Test could justify this tactical adjustment.
