Champions Trophy 2025: 7 Trophies and counting…A look at the ICC tournaments won by Team India

…Ab nahi to kab…
Hum nahi to kaun…!

It felt like Deepawali before Holi in India!

And why wouldn’t it? The entire nation was celebrating as Team India had just won their third ICC Champions Trophy title and their seventh ICC trophy overall, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling final in Dubai.

India has long been one of the best cricket teams in the world, consistently making it to the knockout stages of major tournaments. They reached the finals of the 2003 ODI World Cup, the 2017 Champions Trophy, the 2023 ODI World Cup, and twice in the World Test Championship (2019-21 and 2021-23 cycles).

However, their journey has been filled with both heartbreak and triumph. Each victory has been a testament to their resilience, skill, and determination. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and revisit these glorious moments

1983 – ICC Cricket World Cup

Led by the charismatic Kapil Dev, India stunned the world by defeating the mighty West Indies at Lord’s. Defending a modest total of 183, the Indian team displayed incredible grit and determination. The image of Kapil lifting the trophy remains one of the most iconic moments in cricket history and changed Indian cricket forever.

2002 – ICC Champions Trophy (Joint Winners with Sri Lanka)

Under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership, India shared the Champions Trophy with Sri Lanka after rain washed out the final in Colombo. Though the title was shared, it marked India’s growing dominance in world cricket.

2007 – ICC T20 World Cup

It was a young squad that created magic for millions of fans!
Under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, India made history by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in a tense final at Johannesburg in the inaugural edition of the tournament. Joginder Sharma’s last-over heroics and Dhoni’s calm leadership ushered in a new era of T20 cricket in India.

2011 – ICC Cricket World Cup

The 28-year-long wait ended in spectacular fashion at Wankhede Stadium!
MS Dhoni sealed the victory with an unforgettable six as India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets to win their second ODI World Cup. Gautam Gambhir’s gritty 97 and Yuvraj Singh’s all-round brilliance were instrumental in this historic win. It was moment that etched in the hearts of every Indian cricket fan.

2013 – ICC Champions Trophy

Once again under Dhoni’s leadership, India triumphed, this time in England. Shikhar Dhawan’s explosive batting and the bowlers’ brilliance helped India edge past England in a thrilling five-run victory in a rain-affected final.

2024 – ICC T20 World Cup

With two of India’s biggest superstars, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, nearing the twilight of their T20 careers, the stakes couldn’t have been higher.

India had been always been favorites going into any ICC tournaments, yet the coveted trophy had eluded them time and again. The heartbreak of losing the 2023 ODI World Cup final at home still cast a long shadow over the team.

Determined to turn the tide, Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid worked relentlessly to rebuild the team’s confidence. India showcased their dominance, proving why they were one of the most formidable sides in world cricket.

Then came the grand finale—a high-octane clash against South Africa. With nerves of steel and unwavering determination, India defended their total in a thrilling contest, clinching victory by just seven runs. The triumph not only ended their ICC title drought but also marked their second T20 World Cup win, adding another trophy to the already glitering cabinet.

From Kapil Dev’s 1983 triumph to Rohit Sharma’s 2025 victory, Indian cricket has come a long way. Each of these victories has been a milestone, inspiring future generations and one thing is for sure- Indian cricket’s golden legacy is far from over and the future is damn bright!
