Sawan 2024: 5 food items to eat and avoid during the holy month

The holy month of Shravan begins on Monday, July 22nd, and will end on August 19th. This month is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and people observe fasts every Monday, also known as 'Sawan Somwar'. They also restrict their diet and eat only saatvik food. The month is marked by the arrival of the monsoon, bringing lush greenery and revitalizing the environment.

For those observing a fast this Sawan, here are some foods you should avoid and eat in this holy month.

5 Foods to avoid during Sawan

Avoid meat and eggs

Those observing a fast should steer clear of meat and eggs. While they are packed with protein, they are considered inauspicious for consumption during fasting. Make sure to replace your eggs and meat with a vegetarian source of protein.

Avoid having onion and garlic

Onion and garlic are believed to increase heat in the body and are considered in Ayurveda, making them unsuitable for consumption during fasting and religious observances. It is advised to eat only sattvic food without these ingredients.

Avoid fried foods

One must try to maintain a healthy diet when fasting. Anything that is fried is generally unhealthy for us. Avoid consuming foods high in oil, such as pakodas and French fries.

Some avoid lentils

Some individuals follow a different Sawan diet where they exclude lentils from their diet.

Avoid spicy foods

Minimise the consumption of spicy foods as having too many spicy foods can cause acidity. It also increases the body's temperature and causes digestive issues like acidity.

5 Foods you can have during Sawan

Have fresh fruits

Fruits are natural, and nutritious, and provide essential vitamins and minerals. They are also hydrating and help maintain energy levels during fasting. Make sure to start your day with some healthy fruits like bananas and avocados.

Have milk and paneer

Dairy products are rich in protein, calcium, and other nutrients. They provide a good source of energy and keep you satiated during fasting. It is especially important for those who are skipping meat during the month of Saawan.

Have sabudana

Sabudana is an excellent source of carbohydrates, which provide energy. It is light on the stomach and easy to digest, making it ideal for fasting days.

Kuttu and Singhara flour

These flours are commonly used during fasting periods as they are gluten-free and easy to digest. They provide essential nutrients and can be used to prepare a variety of dishes.

Have dry fruits

Nuts and dry fruits are nutrient-dense, providing healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals. They are a great snack option during fasting as they keep you full and energized.
