National Nutrition Week 2024: Understanding the essentials of a balanced diet

National Nutrition Week, observed from September 1-7 in India, aims to raise awareness about the importance of balanced nutrition and healthy eating habits.

The week-long campaign emphasizes the role of proper diet in preventing malnutrition and lifestyle diseases. Various programs and initiatives are organized to educate the public on making nutritious food choices for better health and well-being.

But do you know what a healthy diet actually consists of? According to the World Health Organization, a balanced diet includes a variety of foods from different groups, providing all essential nutrients.

As per Indian Council of Medical Research guidelines, for an average adult, the daily calorie requirement ranges between 2,000-2,500 kcal, with protein intake at 0.8-1 gram per kilogram of body weight. Carbohydrates should comprise 55-60 per cent of the total daily energy intake, fats should be less than 30 per cent, and daily fibre intake should be 25-30 grams.

Moreover, water plays a crucial role in your diet, aiding digestion, nutrient absorption, and detoxification

Importance of a balanced diet:

Strengthens the Immune System: Enhances the body's ability to fight off infections and illnesses.

Reduces Risk of Chronic Diseases: Lowers the likelihood of developing conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Promotes Healthy Weight Management: Helps maintain an ideal weight by providing a balanced intake of calories and nutrients.

Improves Digestive Health: Aids in proper digestion and absorption of nutrients, preventing digestive issues.

Enhances Mental Well-being: Supports brain function, mood regulation, and cognitive performance.
