200 million dollars! That's the amount the world is estimated to spend every year on these unassuming seeds by 2032.

Makhana, also known as foxseed nuts or popped lotus seeds, is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. Thanks to its exceptional nutritional value, the demand for this superfood is skyrocketing.

These small yet mighty seeds have captured the attention of fitness enthusiasts and health-conscious snackers globally.

From where did makhana originate?

Makhana's rich history dates back over 200 years, with its cultivation originating in the Mithila region of Bihar, particularly in Madhubani, which proudly holds a GI tag. Even today, 90% of Makhana production is done in this region.

As per the estimates by the National Research Center for Makhana, the total area under makhana cultivation in India is approximately 15,000 hectares.

This translates to an estimated production value of 250 crore rupees at the farmers' level and generates revenue of 550 crore rupees at the traders' level.

India is not only the largest producer and consumer of this superfood, it’s also the biggest exporter.

Outside India, Makhana is highly popular in countries such as China, Japan, and Thailand. It's also gaining popularity in the western world now, with exports to the United States and Europe witnessing strong growth.

What has worked in Makhana's favor is the fact that it packs a punch of health benefits in a small pop. These seeds are rich in nutrients, low in calories, and high in antioxidants. According to experts, they support heart health and improve digestive health. Experts say that Makhana is also beneficial for hair and skin, as well as for diabetic individuals.

Nutritional breakdown of 100 grams of makhana

It has about 347 calories and provides 9.7 grams of protein. You'll find almost 77 grams of carbohydrates, including 14.5 grams of fiber, with almost no sugars or fat. On the mineral side, makhana packs in 500 milligrams of potassium, along with 60 milligrams each of calcium and magnesium, and 220 milligrams of phosphorus.

Benefits of makhana

The rising awareness among individuals about the health benefits of makhana has led to its inclusion in our daily diet in various forms such as roasted makhana, makhana chaat, and makhana smoothies.

In fact, in 2023 it was the most ordered snack on Swiggy's quick commerce platform, Instamart. When it came to snacking, Makhana stole the spotlight with an impressive 1.3 million orders.
