Fisherfolk’s safety and prosperity are a government priority: MP CM Dr. Mohan Yadav

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has reaffirmed the Madhya Pradesh government's commitment to ensuring the safety and prosperity of fisherfolk, calling it a top priority.

The state is implementing several initiatives to improve security, including the establishment of Control Command Centres and Transit Houses. Cutting-edge technology is also being introduced to monitor the safety of fishers and conserve fish seed in the state’s major reservoirs.

As part of a pilot initiative, the Madhya Pradesh Fisheries Federation is setting up a modern Command Control Room equipped with drone GPS and CCTV at Indira Sagar—one of the largest reservoirs in India. The facility will allow rapid emergency response and provide round-the-clock surveillance from headquarters.

“Drones will provide live monitoring of the water bodies, while GPS systems will track the location of fishing boats, enabling immediate aid during emergencies,” a statement said. The advanced system will also enhance the monitoring of fish breeding grounds and help regulate fishing activity more effectively.

Transit Houses and Floating Platforms for Safer Living Conditions

Fisherfolk working across reservoirs often stay on remote islands or reservoir banks for 15 to 30 days, especially during fishing seasons.

The rising water levels during the monsoon increase risks posed by aquatic animals and other natural hazards. To address this, the Federation has proposed the construction of five Transit Houses on the islands of Gandhi Sagar and Indira Sagar, along with two Floating Platforms situated within the reservoirs.

“These facilities will provide emergency cooking areas, solar mobile charging stations, and bio-toilets for fisherfolk,” officials said. These efforts aim to improve both the safety and the quality of life for the fishing community.

The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to the sustainable management of aquatic resources, while also increasing fish production. The use of modern technology is fostering innovation in fishing and aquaculture practices throughout the state.

Modern Kevat Training Institute Coming Up in Bhopal

In a step toward professionalizing the sector, the state government is establishing an Advanced Kevat Training Institute in Bhopal, with funding of ₹5 crore under the central government's Fisheries Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF).

The institute will provide specialized training in various modern aquaculture techniques, including Cage Culture, Biofloc Technology, Recirculatory Aquaculture Systems (RAS), hygienic fish handling, processing, packaging, and value addition.

“Through this training, fisherfolk will gain technical knowledge and professional skills aligned with global standards in aquaculture,” the statement added.

The state government’s comprehensive approach reflects its commitment to improving livelihoods and safety for fisherfolk, while strengthening Madhya Pradesh’s position in India’s aquaculture sector.
