Days after 8 people were allegedly burned alive following a murder, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the spot of the crimes in Birbhum district. Banerjee was seen interacting with relatives of the victims. A man was seen crying severely as Mamata offered him water and tried to console him.

She reportedly handed over cheques of Rs 5 lakh to families of those killed in the violence, and promised government jobs.
Rs 2 lakh financial aid for reconstruction of houses was also reportedly promised.

Ahead of the CM's visit, heavy security deployment was seen in Bogtui village in Rampurhat where 3 women and 2 children were among those allegedly locked in their houses and burned alive on March 22. The violence is believed to have occurred after a local Trinamool Congress leader was killed in a crude bomb attack.

Coinciding with Mamata's trip was a meeting of TMC Parliamentarians and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Central government has taken note of the Birbhum violence with Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly calling for justice.

The TMC MPs sought removal of Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar with whom Banerjee's government has had multiple run-ins.
