Rishab Shetty trolled as he takes a dig at Bollywood; says 'it shows India in bad light'

Kannada actor and filmmaker Rishab Shetty, who recently won a National Film Award for his role in the Kannada film ‘Kantara’, has taken a dig at Bollywood. In a recent interview, Shetty criticised Bollywood for depicting India negatively at international film festivals. He emphasized his desire to present a positive image of India through his own films.

In an interview with MetroSaga, Rishab Shetty shared his opinion on Bollywood and said, ‘Indian films, especially Bollywood, show India in a bad light. These art films are invited to global events and given a red carpet welcome. My nation, my state, my language is my pride. Why not show it on a positive note? That's what I am trying to do.’

The interview clip is now going viral on social media.

Shetty’s comments on Bollywood have sparked backlash from some quarters. Critics have pointed out his scenes with Sapthami Gowda in Kantara, accusing him of hypocrisy. The film’s intimate scenes were criticised for objectifying women and raising concerns about consent.

About his National Award and work front

On August 16, the 70th National Film Awards were announced, and Rishab Shetty won Best Actor for ‘Kantara’. He expressed his gratitude for the honour and thanked his entire team for their support.

He said, ‘I am truly overwhelmed by the honour of this National Award for Kantara. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been part of this journey, the incredible team of artists, technicians and especially Hombale Films.’

Rishab Shetty continued, ‘The audiences have made this film what it is and their support fills me with a deep sense of responsibility. I am committed to working even harder to bring an even better film to our viewers. With utmost respect, I dedicate this award to our Kannada audience, the Daiva Nartakas and Appu sir. I thank the divine as we have reached this moment through the blessings of the Daivas.’

On the work front, Shetty is currently shooting ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, a prequel to the original film. The movie is anticipated to release in early 2025, though an official confirmation is still pending.
