'It's about representation', Pakistanis unhappy with the casting of Ali in Netflix's 'Squid Game'

'Squid Game', Netflix's latest and arguably biggest debut with 111 million viewers within less than a month, is definitely a fan favourite.

But despite the fact that it is the number one viewed show in Pakistan right now, many of our neighbours aren't too pleased. While many have loved the show and its concept, the character of Abdul Ali and more specifically his casting has rubbed some the wrong way.

In a way that hearkens back to the misjudged casting of 'Ghost in the Shell', Pakistanis have pointed out that not only is Ali, the only Pakistani character on the dystopian drama, is played by an Indian actor, Anupam Tripathi the actor is also not a Muslim.

Pakistani actor Ahmed Ali Butt criticized 'Squid Game' producers for this casting choice asking, "Why can't these productions cast original Pakistani actors for such roles?"

Not everyone in Pakistan agrees. Ali Gul Pir, a comedian based in Pakistan said Anupam Tripathi, speaks fluent Korean, and culturally India and Pakistan share many elements, down to physical appearance.

There are naysayers and there are those who think the producers of the Korean show did justice to the character.
