Sean 'Diddy' Combs renews bid for release as he awaits his trial for sex trafficking charges

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs' attorney is set to file an appeal for his release from prison, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE on September 30.

Alexandra Shapiro, a member of Combs' legal team, submitted a notice of intent to appeal after he was denied bail twice. The actual appeal brief is expected to be filed soon, a source close to Combs informs PEOPLE.

Combs is assembling his ‘dream legal defense team,’ bringing on trial lawyer Anthony Ricco and appellate lawyer Shapiro, the source adds.

The 54-year-old music mogul was arrested at a Manhattan hotel on September 16. His 14-page indictment was unsealed the following day, outlining the charges against him.

He faces allegations of hosting multiple ‘freak offs,’ which prosecutors described as ‘elaborate and produced sex performances,’ and coercing others to participate. Additionally, he is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting his victims.

On September 18, the same day the notice of intent to appeal was filed, Combs was denied bail for the second time and is currently held at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center.

Magistrate Judge Robyn F. Tarnofsky, who initially denied Combs' bail on September 17, cited his alleged ‘substance abuse and what seems like anger issues,’ stating, ‘I don’t know that you can trust yourself’ not to harm others.

Meanwhile, sources revealed to PEOPLE on September 29 that Combs is no longer on suicide watch. His family has visited him as he awaits trial in prison.

‘He is focused and very strong,’ a lawyer for Combs told PEOPLE. ‘He is concentrating on his defense and preparing for his trial.’

Sources had previously reported that Combs was placed on suicide watch as a precaution, noting he was in shock. His mental state was unclear at the time, and it was unknown how long he had been under observation.

Suicide watch involves ‘supervisory precautions taken for suicidal inmates that require frequent observation,’ according to the U.S. Department of Justice National Institute of Corrections.

Combs' next court appearance is scheduled for early October.
