Michelle Yeoh deletes post about fellow Oscars nominee Cate Blanchett that may've violated Academy rules

Actor Michelle Yeoh caused a stir when she shared snippets of a Vogue article on Instagram that highlighted the lack of representation at the ceremony and mentioned fellow Oscar-nominee and two-time winner Cate Blanchett. The article was shared by her just hours before the Oscars voting closed on March 7.

The article, written by Radhika Seth, is titled ‘It’s Been Over Two Decades Since We’ve Had a Non-White Best Actress Winner. Will That Change in 2023?’. It reads, ‘Detractors would say that Blanchett’s is the stronger performance — the acting veteran is, indisputably, incredible as the prolific conductor Lydia Tár — but it should be noted that she already has two Oscars (for best supporting actress for The Aviator in 2005, and best actress for Blue Jasmine in 2014). A third would perhaps confirm her status as an industry titan but, considering her expansive and unparalleled body of work, are we still in need of yet more confirmation?’

The article continues, ‘Meanwhile, for Yeoh, an Oscar would be life-changing: her name would forever be preceded by the phrase ‘Academy Award winner,’ and it should result in her getting meatier parts, after a decade of being criminally underused in Hollywood.’

Michelle Yeoh has been nominated in the Best Actress category along with Cate Blanchett, who is nominated for her performance in ‘Tar’. Cate has won multiple awards including the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and BAFTA. The screenshots of the article which Michelle highlighted on Instagram took note of the possibility of Cate's win, and she received severe backlash from users online.

After being called out for targeting the other nominee in her post and sparking the debate if she has violated one of the rules of the Academy, Michelle deleted her post.

As stated in no. 11, ‘References to Other Nominees,’ Part B of the rule of The Academy reads: ‘any tactic that singles out ‘the competition’ by name or titles is expressly forbidden.’

Michelle Yeoh has been nominated for her performance in the multiverse-spanning ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’. If she wins, it would make her the first Asian actor to win the award in the Academy's almost 100-year-old history.
