Leslie Phillips, ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Carry On’ actor, dies at 98 after a prolonged illness

Actor Leslie Phillips, best known for his roles in films like ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Carry On’, passed away at 98 after a prolonged illness. Phillips' agent Jonathan Lloyd confirmed the actor died peacefully in his sleep on November 7.

His wife Zara told the Sun, ‘I've lost a wonderful husband and the public has lost a truly great showman. He was quite simply a national treasure. People loved him. He was mobbed everywhere he went.’

Phillips had reportedly starred in over 200 movies and TV and radio series in his career spanning over 80 years. He was the voice of the Sorting Hat in the ‘Harry Potter’ films.
He was also known for catchphrases such as ‘Ding dong’, `Heee-llo,` and `I Say` from movies like ‘Carry On Nurse’, ‘Carry On Columbus’, and ‘Carry On Teacher’.

Phillips also appeared in Angelina Jolie’s 2001 film ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’. He was nominated for a BAFTA and received a British Independent Film Award for his supporting performance in the 2006 film ‘Venus.’ In 2008, he was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CB) in recognition of his acting career.
