Johnny Depp to direct first film in 25 years, to co-produce biopic on Amedeo Modigliani with Al Pacino

Johnny Depp will reportedly be wearing the director's hat once again after 25 years. The actor will be directing a biopic on Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, which he will co-produce with veteran actor Al Pacino and Barry Navidi, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is the second time that Depp will in the role of director for a feature film. He earlier made his directorial debut with 1997 film 'The Brave', in which he starred along with Marlon Brando.

Amedeo Modigliani was a painter and sculptor in Paris whose work wasn't well received during his lifetime but his creations became much sought after his death in 1920.

'Modigliani' is based on a play by Dennis McIntyre. It is being adapted for the big screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will feature an eventful 48 hours of Modigliani's life, which established him as an artistic legend. The film's production will reportedly begin in Europe in the spring of 2023. The makers will soon share the film's cast.

'The saga of Mr. Modigliani's life is one that I'm incredibly honored, and truly humbled, to bring to the screen. It was a life of great hardship, but eventual triumph — a universally human story all viewers can identify with,' said Depp, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Besides directing this biopic, Johnny Depp will next feature as French king Louis XV in the upcoming film 'Jeanne du Barry'. This film will be his first release after his highly-publicised defamation case against former wife Amber Heard, which concluded in June.
