Amber Heard officially files to appeal verdict in the Johnny Depp trial

Amber Heard has filed to appeal the verdict in the defamation trial with former husband Johnny Depp. In June, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor was awarded $10 million in damages after the seven-member jury determined that Heard defamed him in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed, claiming she survived domestic abuse. Amber Heard was awarded $2 million in damages as well on one of the three defamation countersuit claims.

Filing a notice of appeal in the Virginia court, the ‘Aquaman’ actor’s spokesperson in a statement said, ‘We believe the court made errors that prevented a just and fair verdict consistent with the First Amendment. We are therefore appealing the verdict.’

‘While we realize today's filing will ignite the Twitter bonfires, there are steps we need to take to ensure both fairness and justice,’ the spokesperson added.

A representative for Johnny Depp is yet to respond.

Earlier this month, Judge Penney Azcarate denied Heard’s request for a mistrial. The actor’s lawyers argued that one of the jurors should not have been eligible to serve as his summons was intended for his father, who had the same name and lived at the same address.

The judge ruled that there was 'no evidence of fraud or wrongdoing' by the juror and the verdict should stand.
