Emmys 2024: Candice Bergen and Selena Gomez humorously roast JD Vance's 'childless cat ladies' remark

Candice Bergen and Selena Gomez brought some sharp humour to the Emmys, taking jabs at Republican VP candidate JD Vance's infamous ‘childless cat ladies’ remark.

Bergen referenced her show Murphy Brown, saying, ‘In one iconic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became a single mom. Oh, how times have changed. Now, a Republican VP candidate would never attack a woman for having kids. So, my work here is done. Meow.’

Gomez playfully teased her ‘Only Murders in the Building’ co-stars, quipping, ‘And let me say what an honour it is to work with two guys who are this far away from being childless cat ladies.’

For the unversed, in a 2021 interview with Tucker Carlson, Vance said, ‘We’re effectively run in this country, be it the Democrats, be it our corporate oligarchs, by a bunch of childless cat ladies, who are miserable at their own lives and the choices they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.’

JD Vance's ‘childless cat ladies’ comment has faced widespread criticism and mockery in pop culture, from late-night jokes to Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris.

Though Harris doesn’t have biological children, she’s been a stepmother to her husband Doug Emhoff’s two kids for over a decade.

After Vance's statement resurfaced, Emhoff's ex-wife, Kerstin Emhoff, swiftly defended Harris, saying, ‘She is loving, nurturing, fiercely protective, and always present. I love our blended family and am grateful to have her in it.’

Meanwhile, Senator JD Vance criticised Taylor Swift as ‘fundamentally disconnected’ after she endorsed Kamala Harris for president. Swift, a Grammy award-winning singer, backed Harris in an Instagram post, referring to the vice president as a ‘fellow childless cat lady.’

Vance, former President Donald Trump's vice-presidential candidate, shared his thoughts during an appearance on Fox News. He responded to Swift's support for Harris, which came after the Tuesday night presidential debate aired on ABC.

Swift wrote on Instagram, ‘I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.’

Alongside a photo of her cat, Swift added, ‘I believe she’s a steady-handed (calm and composed) leader, and this country would benefit from leadership based on calm, not chaos.’

Earlier, celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Whoopi Goldberg, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and comedian Chelsea Handler have all spoken out against the vice-presidential nominee's ‘childless cat lady’ remark.
