‘Maharaj’ streaming now: Gujarat High Court lifts stay from Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan’s debut film

After a delay due to legal trouble, Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan has finally made his acting debut as the court gave a green signal to his film ‘Maharaj’. In a big relief for the makers, the Gujarat High Court lifted the stay on the film. Soon after, Netflix India in a joint post with YRF and Jaideep Ahlawat, announced that the film is now streaming on the platform.

‘Maharaj’ stay lifted

The Gujarat High Court has lifted the interim stay to the release of ‘Maharaj’, the debut film of Bollywood star Aamir Khan's son Junaid, observing that there is nothing derogatory in the movie as alleged. The court also noted that the movie has been certified by CBFC and it does not target the sect.

YRF Entertainment's ‘Maharaj’ did not premiere on Netflix on June 14 as scheduled after the Gujarat High Court stayed its release on June 13. Members of a Hindu sect- Pushtimarg, who claimed the film would hurt their religious sentiments had filed a petition in the court against its release on Netflix.

About the controversy

Earlier, Hindu organisations raised objections alleging that the film hurts religious sentiments. Hashtags like ‘Boycott Netflix’ and ‘Ban Maharaj Film’ were trending ahead of the film’s scheduled release date as some social media users called for the film’s boycott.

No promotion strategy

In an unusual move, the film did not have any promotions even before its legal trouble. No teaser or trailer was put out by the makers for the film, barring a poster featuring Jaideep and Junaid.

About ‘Maharaj’

Set in pre-independent India and ‘Maharaj’ is based on the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, involving a Vaishnavite religious leader and social reformer Karsandas Mulji. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and produced by Aditya Chopra under YRF Entertainment, the movie also stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey with Sharvari. The film is part of the multi-year creative partnership between Netflix and Yash Raj Films' digital arm YRF Entertainment.
