Javed Akhtar takes a dig at Ranbir Kapoor starrer ‘Animal’, slams Yash Chopra’s film's take on feminism

Javed Akhtar has once again spoken out against Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial ‘Animal’ starring Ranbir Kapoor in lead role. The veteran Bollywood lyricist mentioned a controversial scene from the film and the idea of an angry young man in modern films. Akhtar didn’t hesitate to slam Yash Chopra’s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ for its idea of feminism.

In a recent interview, Javed Akhtar, who has previously criticised the film, once again called out the misogyny in the film. He denied watching the film and said that people told him about the controversial ‘lick my shoe’ scene, and asked why would he watch it. On being asked why the idea of a hero as an ‘angry young man’ still exists in the South film industry, the famous lyricist said, “Wahan (in south) bhi dekhiye woh ultimately apna caricature ban raha hai (There also you can see that ultimately he is becoming a caricature of himself).”

Speaking about the portrayal of modern women in films, Javed Akhtar mentioned Yash Chopra’s ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. He cited a dialogue in the film.

Javed said, "Ek picture thi Yash Chopra saab ki, Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Usme ek dialogue he from one of the heroines, ‘Mein duniya mein jitni nationalities hein, har nationality ke ek admi ke ladke ke saath sone ke baad shaadi karungi!’ Arre bhai tu itni mehnat kyu karegi? Tu empowered hain? Tu modern hain? Tu cool hain? Tu forward thinking hain? Maan jaate hei na… itni mehnat karne ki zaroorat nahi hain tumko! Bahoot nationalities hain duniya mein us chakkar mein mat paro (There was a Yash Chopra film named Jab Tak Hai Jaan, in which there is a dialogue where one of the heroines says that I will marry you after I sleep with one man from all the nationalities. But why would you do so much hard work? Are you empowered and modern and cool? We agree so you let go of that hard work. There are a lot of nationalities)."

He went on to say that because the filmmakers are not very clear what is an empowered girl so they are exaggerating. The veteran lyricist added that the filmmakers are confused about the idea of a modern Indian woman.
